Awaiting Konstantimark

Fennesz 'Venice' (still!)

I should explain The Shins don't get a UK release until April '04. I have an import copy but I didn't get it until after the 2003 poll so I'm including it in my 2004 list.

Key

0.00 - 6.00. Very poor to distinctly average
6.00 - 6.50. Reasonable, but not good
6.50 - 6.99. Pretty good, worth checking out
7.00 - 7.50. Very good album
7.50 - 8.00. Superb album, likely album of the year
8.00 - 9.99. Masterpiece, all time classic

Revised Konstantimarks

* Means that this album has been reviewed twice and the konstantimark is an average of the two scores. I hope to review each album twice to give them all a more indicative position on the list.

Yeah, I noticed that. Your scoring system's obviously a lot more sophisticated, too...

but that doesn't mean it's right! :D

Dude, SMiLE and Sung Tongs deserve 9s. I might be little generous with some of the 8s, but only time will tell...

For me, giving something a 6 is pretty harsh. I don't have very many of those on my list because I haven't spent much time listening things that haven't grabbed me unless I had already bought them.

If 5 is average 6 is better than average. Therefore 6 isn't to shoddy at all.

But Spade, seriously what do you expect from someone whos only math skill involves how much dole his lazy ass is going to steal from the people who actually do work?

I'm with Konstantin on this one. I don't take seriously any rating system that doesn't leave a couple points to differentiate one of the best albums of all time from something that's just very good. Magazine's don't leave the point differentials because they are in the business of trying to market & sell records. Us amateurs aren't and should leave more room to distinguish the all-time greats from annual favorites. I'm too lazy to rank things but I doubt I'd rank more than 10 albums over 7.0 this year, and nothing an 8 or above.

It's £55 a week and to be able to live off that you have to have far more extensive math skills than you might think - including adding small positive numbers to large negative numbers.

See, I actually don't feel like most highly revered classic albums - even my favorites - are better than a lot of great ones, current or otherwise, by that huge a margin. They all have flaws, and pretty much anything can be overplayed.

It might seem arrogant for me to rate the albums I've heard this year as if nearly all of them are well above average, but I truly believe they are. Just as you suggest that we should leave room at the top for the classics, I think we should leave plenty at the bottom for the crap. I realize konstantinl is leaving room at both ends by ranking all of his albums as just above average, but I think you're being overly conservative.

There are truly very few albums which qualify for the 9.5-10.0 range in my book, and I don't feel like there's any reason to leave a full 2 point range (8-10) to have room to differentiate them all.

Apparently its enough to have picked up 101 cds this year, have internet access and i could go on, but you know what---its not worth it because you honestly seem like a really good person and we dont even live in the same country....In truth, i wish you the best in finding whatever it is that you are looking for...

Small positive number - benefit cheque
Large negative number - credit card bill

New entry on my master list. The bounderies between success and failure can be so small can't they? Morrissey's 'I Am The Quarry' misses the Top 20 by 0.03. Sorry Moz!

Updated.

Just rescuing this from page 6. I plan to keep it up until I make my year-end list.

Somebody else should try and do this, too. I know someone else besides KonstantinL, Radcliffe, and myself had posted ratings on the refugee board.
