Everything's always artsier when it's tiny.

I like that one!

So has anyone actually seen the Gates in NYC? I'm just curious to see what people actually thought of it.

It's an eyesore. Central Park is a piece of art itself, and The Gates just detract from that. The park has been defaced. And it's not just the awful contract of colors, but now you can't enjoy the park as you normally would due to the enormous crowds of people. You can't walk at your own pace because of the guy in front of you walking slowly so he can observe each and every gate in close detail. It makes a walk in the park unpleasant.

We don't need this bullshit.

I liked this humorous piece on The Gates.

I didn't even know about these. I just checked them out online and all I can say is FUGLY!!

I agree with g, an eyesore. If you're walking under them you can't even look up at the city around you. It's just orange everywhere.

Who are the ad wizards that came up with that one?

Hell, they're only there for a few weeks when most folks aren't in the park anyhow. And they paid for it themselves. I thought it was worth seeing if only for the spectacle of so many smiling new yorkers in one place (the first time) and for the big circle of them whipping around in high winds with snow (the second time).

I'm a silly person. But seriously, there's hardly anything redeeming about them. They're not beautiful. They're not original. They're just there. They're not there for people to enjoy. They're there for Christo and Jean-Claude to enjoy.

Yeah, I sort of felt that way, but in the end, I decided I rather not like them.

most of those smiling people are probably from the suburbs.

It's true there were a lot of Jersey tags parked on nearby streets. But one of them was my hard-ass upper west-side cousin, senior manager for mergers and acquisitions or whatever, and she doesn't smile much in public. Pretty cool.

are the gates pretty?
is it art or a piece of crap?
they've ruined my beautiful park.
it's orange not saffron.
they make people happy/piss people off.
people are making fun of them.

there have been all kinds of responses and reactions to the gates and christo and jean claude but all i know is that for 2 weeks people walked through the park or saw the gates on worldwide television and talked about art. when was the last time this happened on this large of a scale?

art is a part of our humaness.
dig it.

lol...there kooky but i adore them.

as an aside, i think the gates are okay. i like the pink wrapped islands better and feel the reichstag(sp?) was one of their most powerful works.

i thought it was a swell experience walking around the park saturday afternoon with the gates. some moments were particularly striking - ok, anytime you faced towards the sun, with a row of gates in front of you, watching both the wind and light filter through.

we took a bunch of band photos with the gates incorporated, but none really came out looking too hot.

also, it was cold.
