After hitting the big time with 2005's breakthrough Plans, Death Cab For Cutie looks to be headed down an unexpected direction for the follow up.

In a recent Billboard piece, the band is promising a "curve ball" and though it will have a number of slower songs, the band is promising some surprises:

It's really weird. It's really, really good, I think, but it's totally a curve ball, and I think it's gonna be a really polarizing record. But I'm really excited about it. It's really got some teeth. The landscape of the thing is way, way more lunar than the urban meadow sort of thing that has been happening for the last couple of records.

[It's also] louder and more dissonant and ... I think abrasive would be a good word to use. [We were influenced by] heavy, sludgy, slow metal [and] synth-punk band Braniac.
The record is expected in 2008.

Cool

Their last one was a big disappointment for me.

I'm actually looking more forward to the Chris Walla solo album than this, oddly enough.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how lovable Ben Gibbard is.

I'll check out the inevitable leak simply because they mention "heavy, sludgy, slow metal."

this kind of cracks me up. who ever says their new album is influenced by one band? i've heard things like "yeah, the guitarist has been listening to a lot of reggae and breakbeats, and i think that shows up on the album." but just "we were influenced by Braniac"? Weird.

odds on Braniac resurgence: 3 to 1
odds on this album sucking: 1 to 1
odds on reclassification to wuss-pop: not high enough.

They should post/leak a new song instead of telling us it's going to sound like a cross between Melvins/Brainiac.

what cracks me up even more is "music from and inspired by the movie - Shazam! Starring Shaquille O'Neal"

Bellingham, Washington's Death Cab For Cutie have announced details about their sophomore album for major label Atlantic Records. The album is due out May 13th, and will be titled Narrow Stairs. Bassist Nick Harmer described the album as "a sampling of the most uptempo, upbeat Death Cab songs as well as some of our saddest."

The band previously released Plans in 2005 while guitarist and producer Chris Walla released Field Manual this year on Barsuk Records.

Tracklist:

1. "Bixby Canyon Bridge"
2. "I Will Possess Your Heart"
3. "No Sunlight"
4. "Cath..."
5. "Talking Bird"
6. "You Can Do Better Than Me"
7. "Grapevine Fires"
8. "Your New Twin Size Bed"
9. "Long Division"
10. "Pity and Fear"
11. "The Ice Is Getting Thinner"

I never displike what they do, but the last one wasn't as good. I think they only get the backlash because they're popular. It's pretty harmless stuff.

Have they had their "Everybody Hurts" yet? They certainly haven't had a "Shiny Happy People" yet, thankfully.

they've got a couple albums to go before that...but its coming.

5 indie albums, each one more successfull commercially than the last.

a fairly respected major label debut with a few good singles.

the college age crowd that suddenly got younger

bright and jangly

They are REM

Come on, REM didn't start sucking this hard until well into their 2nd decade.

I actually really like Plans. Its charms are subtle but they are there, and there are some really nice pop gems too. I think Soul Meets Body was one of the better singles in recent memory.

They're still good live, some of their crowd is a little bonehead but I'm used to it.

Plans was really good if you gave it some time. i dismissed it but bought it and forced myself to listen to it. they have some really strong songs on it, the problem i have is you can really hear the filler.
