Why do people put grit down on snow?

Do you prefer walking through ankle deep, wet gritty slush rather than snow?

Does it make it safer? Are you less likely to slip wading through icey melted sludge than several inches of thick powder?

Do you prefer the aesthetic of cracked chewing gum flecked pavement coated in a disgusting gluetinous porridge over a prestine covering of white, sent earthward from the heavens?
