On Thursday, February 24, 2005, 100.3fm, WPLY, Y100, was taken off the air. After nearly 12 years at 100.3, Alternative Rock disappeared from the Philadelphia radio landscape. With it went the musical companion of over 500,000 residents of the Delaware Valley.

This was the only station of its kind in the Philadelphia area, and now its gone. Pretty much the entire staff showed up today to find that it would be their last day at the station. Just like that, gone.

My friend has an internship there right now and has not been contacted. In all likelyhood the internship is terminated as well.

The station converted over to rap at midnight, but the staff has quickly put together an internet station to keep the music going.

We will miss you, Y100.

whoa, what happened?! i listened to that station all through high school. it was really good after midnight. i remember driving home many nights and hearing an array of excellent tunes. i'd only lived there for a year out of the past five, but it did seem to not have been as best anymore. how the mighty are falling...

I'm not sure exactly what happened...no one really is sure yet.

That's all I have to work with, that and my friend who interned there. He seems to know a little bit.

Well there is an online petition to save the station:

http://www.y100rocks.com

so far there are about 8500 signatures.

I'll keep you all posted in the coming days on any news or developments.

Last I heard it, and I don't listen often (on purpose), it was just another corporate (owned by Infinity, yes?) rock station, with the exact same playlist as every other corporate rock station in every other city. Good riddance, I say.

Maybe Infinity and CC will get the message that their stations are terrible.

If they had a couple hours that you enjoyed, sorry, but one or two good hours and 23 shitty ones does not make a radio station good, imho.

i don't listen to too much radio around here but the thing that pisses me off the most is now we have FOUR hip hop stations that all play the same songs! (not that that's anything new in radio) And what happened to preston and steve? i absolutely hate that show, but that was a pretty big name show around here to just be yanked right out from under the listeners' noses without any warning.

Y100 was owned by Radio One, and Preston and Steve are moving to WMMR 93.3

Oh, the Shriners have other places to go, I am sure.

I want one of their little cars though.
