So someone had asked me a while back to pull together a mix of my favorite Frames/Glen songs, so here 'tis. I do not have "Another Love Song" nor do I have the Swell Season s/t album, so tracks from those albums are not represented here. I also did not include anything from Breadcrumb Trail or Set List. I'm typically not a big fan of live albums anyway. I put these in chronological order upon album/ep release date. I suppose the Frames are an acquired taste, but I've seen them enough times to know that they are an amazing band live and can evoke emotions within that you never knew you had! Glen's a great showman, for sure, but you can't deny the electricity of Colm's violin playing, or Joe's driving basslines... (they've had a couple different drummers and added backup guitarist Rob with "Burn the Maps" I think-- or at least he was officially added then). Not sure what the future holds for the Frames as a band, since Glen is having success with Marketa (Swell Season) these days on the coattails of "Once" soundtrack success. If you ever do have the opportunity to see them live, I strongly recommend it. Enjoy!

hey, awesome! I was just listening to his track on the I'm Not There (You Ain't Going Nowhere:

) and thinking that I wouldn't mind knowing more about this guy. So his Oscar winning song wasn't original for the movie after all, is that what I'm seeing?

"Falling Slowly" was released on an album prior to "Once," yes, but I'm not sure if it was written with Marketa beforehand or not.

The Frames are a weird band, really. I mean, they started out with a fairly generic rock-ish vibe, and somehow segued into the soft-loud-soft sound, and for me at least, really shine with their quieter tunes. I know Glen cites the Pixies as a huge influence on his music.

Trivia bit: Glen is actually in the movie "The Commitments." He plays the red-haired guitar player in the band. There's actually a fair number of people from the Irish music scene in that film, but I'd have to froogle it to look them all up.

btw, funny thing... I'd read online somewhere that some stupid American blog thought when Colin Farrell was introducing Glen and Marketa and said he was "quite chuffed," they thought it meant he was angry. Dumbass.

I've had the pleasure of meeting all the guys in the band several times now, and like I've said before, they're super cool down to earth people. So it's hard not to like them when they're just doing their thing, and you can tell they really enjoy it. One of my favorite memories was hanging outside Music Millennium on NW 23rd (before it closed) and talking with Mark Geary and Joe Doyle (from the Frames). It was an unusually bright sunny day for March or April, and both guys were outside smoking while I chatted with them. Mark made some comment to me about how people in America are so beautiful, brown skin and white teeth. Joe kinda snickered in the background, and said, "Unlike Irish people, who have white skin and brown teeth." ;)

I haven't listened to this yet, so excuse the potentially stupid question: do they do any other unorthodox time signature songs (besides the one on the Once soundtrack with which I'm familiar, whose name I'm forgetting right now -- "When Your Mind’s Made Up"?)?

I'm sure there are, Dusty, but I'm too lazy to think about that right now. ;) Give the mix a listen, and let me know what you think.
