Matt Ward & Zooey Deschanel's first album is out next week on Merge.

The only thing previously released by them is a cover of Richard & Linda Thompson's song 'When I Get To The Border' on the soundtrack to one of her films.

That song was pretty great and, being a fan of Ward's albums and Zooey's acting, I have pretty high hopes for this one. She's an accomplished singer anyway so she's got the background.

mmmmm wtf? zooey deschanel? never seen a movie with this broad. I don't know. I like Ward, but this sounds like it could be overly twee. Are they a couple? That would make it even worse.

I'm going to check out that cover of the RT song. The original kicks ass.

The broad is supposedly a brain, actually.

After one listen, I quite enjoy it. I was really expecting M. Ward to be more prevalent in terms of vocals, though.

It's a weird mix of alt-country, '60s girl groups, and '50s vocals.

Just bought it today and finished my first listen. I really enjoyed it. Although I had hoped M. Ward would duet with her more, he only sings on two of the tracks.

Yup. I'm hearing some Mary Ford (homage-ish) in there. Perhaps some Patsy Cline?

"This Is Not A Test" = great tune

"Black Hole" = not so great

It's an imperfect album but I find it very hard to dislike Zooey.

Just heard a few songs off of this, and truly enjoyed em. Love her, that voice is just incredible.

Try youtubing some random items of her singing with her other act, they do a lot of cabaret shows together, she's dynamite.

I like that she's not into much modern music(per an interview I read with her last week) that her influences are all ca Brill Building era etc. That way she doesn't sound like the other ten million female singers out there right now.

I have to go find this album this weekend. I can see this being my perfect Spring/Summer album.

My wife wants this. I'll probably pick it up for her soon.
