I saw the commercial too, and was hoping it was just a bad dream. It looks like it's going to be awful. The only way it'll be any good is if they don't try to mimic the original.

I gonna put aside my opinion (which is good god don't do this there's no point just show the original on a network it'll still get ratings) and watch at least the first episode.

I read that the main difference is that the British version plays it for sublime kicks (aka, you gotta know what's funny to find the laughs) while the American version plays it w/o the subtelty and with a laugh track. Quelle Suprise!

<===Has not seen the British version.

Senator, you must rectify this!

What channel is this going to be on? I'm willing to give it a shot, but my expectations for it are pretty low.

I've only ever heard good things. Once I get settled somewhere, I'm gonna rejoin netflix and this'll be high on the list.

Oh, and the new one's gonna be on NBC

the commercials are on nbc's websit (i saw the link when i was checking to see who was on sat.night.live)

i think it looks pretty funny.......not sure which clips have been aired/seen but the commercial where one of the characters convinces his peer to buy a purse was pretty funny.....

i'll watch it....for a while

I was just watching clips of this. Steve Carrell is decent but it's mostly just bad.

edit: they also steal the "tickets to the gun show" line from Anchorman.

as long as it's an original show and not just rehashing the exact same jokes from the british version as i've seen in a few commercials it stands the chance to be okay. PROVE ME RIGHT, NBC!!

i saw one commercial last night. looked like they captured the david brent character. i laughed more tiomes during the 30 second commercial than i do at any other show on tv now.

They don't really remake shows here.

Well apart from the British version of The Golden Girls (Brighton Belles) which was a complete disaster. They just show the original American version really late on BBC2 and then muck about the scheduling, usually for snooker coverage, so you never actually know when it's going to come on.

As a result Seinfeld is cult TV here.

I wouldn't mind if CBS, NBC, ABC, The WB and UPN just went ahead and cancelled all of their sitcoms. Fox is the only network that "gets it."

the original is one of my favorite tv shows ever.
that being said, i hope that the us version will be good. i like the actor they have playing david brent (he was the weatherman from anchorman), and the actor playing gareth i recognize and like (from what, i can't remember).
but i was disappointed that the clip i saw used the same stapler in jello gag from the original.

It would be one thing if they took ideas from the BBC version and came up with something based on it but this looks like a direct rip-off right down to Tim's hair style! Also, the music for the clips is mind-numbingly annoying. While watching the previews I found a reccurring thought was, "this would have been hilarious to me had I not already witnessed David Brent do this ten times better."

The first episode borrows very heavily from the original's first episode. They stray from the original after that. If the first ep is any indication, this show will flop in a tremendous way. I have seen reports from others who have seen several episodes and they say that the more original episodes work much, much better. If the "racism game" commercial is any indication of what NBC has up their sleeves, they might just be right - that's exactly in the vein of the original, and yet created solely for the US version, and it was quite funny. We'll see in a couple weeks . . .
