I have not seen one film that is nomiated this year. The only two films i would'nt mind seeing is Sideways and Neverland. I have heard great things about Million Dollar Baby, however.

I'm really not even interested in watching the oscars this year.

Any one else?

I've seen all 5 nominated for best pic---Sideways is definitely my favorite of the 5, but I did enjoy Million Dollar Baby too. The other 3 were ok, but not great for me.

I thought someone was going to organize an Oscar pool this year---was it Pagoda? OPA? Tough year to predict the winners. I think the only slam dunk among the major categories is Jamie Foxx for best actor.

I was just wondering about the CMJ/Obner Ocsar pool this morning.

I always watch the Oscars, though this year it seems I've seen very few of the films nominated.

I think Million Dollar Baby will almost definitely win best film. There's been so much buzz about this. I haven't seen it yet, mainly because it looks like something I wouldn't really be into, but I've heard so many rave reviews, I'm gonna have to go see it.

I think the only Best Film nominee I've seen is Sideways which was really good, so I'll be pulling for that, even though it has no chance of winning.

Also, If Eternal Sunshine doesn't win best original screenplay, I'm going to throw a fit. This should have been a definite Best Film nominee, not that it would have a chance in that category. If Charlie Kaufman gets snubbed again after losing best adapted screenplay for Adaptation, I will lose all remaining respect I have for the Oscars.

I think Aviator will give MDB a run for it's money among Academy voters.

I'll throw one together. It's been a year since I've sent Dreaded Marco a mix anyway.

Yeah. I guess the 'let's see what happens if we release an Oscar worthy film in March' thing didn't work too well. It has to win for original screenplay though. It just has to.

the oscars fall below cannes and those different guild awards, and probably the golden globes, for me. i still haven't seen the aviator and hotel rwanda, but $ baby was a pretty good movie.

Doesn't Yahoo! have a 'Create your own online Oscar pool' or something?

The Oscars have become abit like the music charts. I don't know who any of these people are and I have very little interest in finding out.

Fine if you do, but I find the Oscars to be just as big of a Hollywood circle jerk of douchebaggery and celebrity patronage.

I don't value the work nor vision of Rob Schneider, but his criticism of AMPAS is pretty spot-on. They won't take him because his work isn't up to Academy standards exemplified by the golden resumes of members like Ed Begley, Jr. or even Tom Hanks. Sure, Hanks was serious in The Green Mile, Forrest Gump and Shaving Ryan's Privates, but let's not forget his earlier output, including Turner and Hooch, The Money Pit and The 'Burbs.

I'm not questioning Hanks' inclusion, but to exclude Schneider due in part to his choice of role is a bit much, especially since Joe Versus the Volcano and Deuce Bigalow are intellectual equals. Perhaps Mr. Schneider has yet to find his Philadelphia, or maybe not. But I do think that this elitist bent tends to shape the Academy's thinking.

EDIT: It's contagious...

I love the Oscars still to this day. And I also like the Independent Spirit awards(which I'm watching the re-broadcast of as I write this).

I've only seen Ray so far, which yeah, Jamie Foxx has that one in the bag.

I really wanted to see Sideways very badly, it just looks absolutely great. And I've always had this little crush on Virginia Madsen ever since I can remember so I'm crossing my fingers that she wins tonight(she just won the Spirit award and her 9 yr old son was with her and it was the cutest thing because she brought him up on stage with her and when her name was originally intro'd he was hugging and kissing her like mad for the cameras)

I would say that the reason Eternal wasn't nominated was this: Even avid filmgoers/lovers were split down the middle on this film. You either loved it or you couldn't stand it(but at least had respect for Kate and Jim in the flick). I actually know a TON of people who didn't care for the movie and thought it was just too much and really boring(I fall into that category).

It's not a film that I think the academy could recognize because of this.

Though I'm sure there would be those here who could say the same about Sideways, I would hazard a guess that the majority of those who don't like Sideways are under 40. Which is understandable.

I actually could really care less about the Oscars, and I'll probably only watch it because I'm working tonight at my on-campus snackshop, and I'm sure people will be watching it there.

I don't know, can you name one even remotely serious role Rob Schneider has even done? How about quality role? At least Hanks can pick decent roles. Schneider is all about toilet humor and shock value. He doesn't even act in the films he makes, he hams it up.

That's the difference. See not every actor can start out by making Oscar winning films right off the bat. The difference between those that end up one day being nominated and those that don't, is that the former experienced growth as an actor. They tried .

And for the record, The Money Pit and the burbs were actually funny. I see nothing even remotely funny about The Hot Chick. Again, it's the quality of funny. Even if they are a little schlocky Hanks's films are heads above Schneiders. I can laugh at one or two parts of Joe Vs The Volcano but The Hot Chick gets turned off immediately when it comes on.

I mean seriously, this is still like comparing Apples and Oranges. If Rob's so upset tell him to choose a bit better when it comes to roles.

Kung Fu's right on target here. Let's face it, the Oscars don't celebrate art -- it's about the producers celebrating themselves. The last time I caught this show, Sam Jackson was snubbed and Landau took home the statue. Granted, Landau's performance in Ed Wood was tip-top, but came nowhere close to role Jackson fucking nailed. I wasn't mad that Jackson lost, I was more disappointed that the Oscars weren't really about the best art. Oscar lost most of its credibility & went pear-shaped long before this, I just happened not to pay any attention.

chase or someone said a ways back the movies chosen by the guild cater to a different audience and demgraphic anymore. Agreed. The selections are no longer relevant or representive of movies I've found to be 'oscar-worthy' - whatever the fuck that means. How long does vicodin stay in your system?

I disagree. I think Schneider is a buffoon on his best days, but Tom Hanks' earlier work isn't high cinema. I much prefer Hanks' earlier work to Schneider's.

The point of the post was not a complaint about award nominations but membership in the Academy. Why is Ed Begley more qualified than Schneider to vote on the nominees? Reviewing their careers before reaching the age of 40, Hanks' resume is better, but not by a great leap. There's a certain amount of hipocrisy in judging Schneider's resume as not up to snuff to join the club.

If the Academy is so damn cultured, why did Gladiator take home a Best Picture Trophy? Would Rob Schneider's vote made it that much worse?
