Last Goodbye -- a lot better than it deserved to be, director is a freakin' genius, but in a way that may be overlooked or underappreciated by most. I mean, there were shots where all they were showing you were feet, and you got the sense of what that scene was meant to convey perfectly. The girl lead had the "smiling without meaning it" down pat, I'd like to see her in something else to see if she can do anything else besides that. And I loved the interview scene.

Hitman -- you gotta wonder about a Vin Diesel movie that even Vin Diesel wouldn't play in, but it was surprisingly albeit predictably good. Timothy Olyphant plays the same character he plays in Deadwood...except bald and clean-shaven. (I.E. "grrr...grrr..." lots of repressed rage kind of thing going on.) And he doesn't get laid, despite lots of nudity and scantily clad shots by the female lead.

spiral - directed by the guy who did hatchet. the payoff is decent but the time spent getting there is ridiculously long. and the music made it seem like a WB show.

panic in year zero/the last man on earth - the whole time i was watching panic i thought it would make a good remake but the original has one of the most annoying lead characters ever. seriously, i was just hoping ray milland would get shot and die and the movie would end.
vincent price was great in last man but it kind of dragged a little and the ending made no sense compared to the other versions (omega man + i am legend). i still haven't read matheson's book.

the omen (2006) - awful, though i've come around on julia stiles and think she's kinda hot now. also, the photographer decapitation scene was excellent.

I thought it was fucking cool. Buscemi & Bukowski should of teamed up.

Jesus was this awful -- on the level of top 30 worst movies I've ever seen, probably.

Image

Thought this was excellently done. A fascinating and insightful look into Bukowski's life.

Image

Trash. Terribly written and poorly acted and not even all that interesting to begin with.

I thought this was very good, and one of last year's best. The people I went with didn't like it much. Very smart script.

The Hitcher.

It came on the television and I didn't turn away. Got really mediocre reviews, but I rather liked it. Had a really nice pace to it.

Have you seen the original? I'm curious how it compares, as the original was one of the most intense films I've ever seen.

I think maybe Sean Bean was as good as Rutger Hauer was in the original, but the rest of it was kind of average. It was good for a remake though.

I have not seen the original. Sooooo... I can't say. Remakes rarely match up, though.

I FINALLY saw There Will Be Blood tonight after literally months of waiting, and goddamn was it one of the most overrated movies I've seen in YEARS. Seriously.

The first hour or so was really good - right about up until they stopped doing the actual drilling. After that it just got silly and dragged and dragged until the end. I'm all for slow-paced movies, but this one was just boring. Daniel Day Lewis was great though and definitely deserved Best Picture.

To add to it, the bitch two rows behind me talked through the ENTIRE thing. Comments included:

"Where da blood at? There Will Be Blood, where da blood at?"
"Where my shoe go?"
"DAMN SON, nigga is CRAZY, what he doing shootin shit in his own house?"
"This the goddamn longest movie I ever seen in my LIFE!"

And finally, WHY did they have to include that "brother from another mother" line in the script? I cringed for about two minutes afterwards.

I don't know about seeing it again -- I never went in for Bukowski anywhere near as much as my old wrecking-crew, circa turn of the willenium -- but for my first prolonged exposure to C.B.'s life & work, rather interesting. I won't get over the creepy 75 or 80 years old man that was laughing at the most inappropriate times.

As to what I am going to see/want to see... I'm stoked that 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days is actually going to be playing MKE -- Downer Theatre -- in the near-term. I suppose my browbeating the staff &/or management about it has paid off. Still don't know how an anti-communism/pro-abortion film is going to play to the intelligentsia on the posh east side. Maybe Busty can have LooGAR tape a PSA to explain how those two themes can co-exist.
