I'm normally drink Scotch when I'm drink whisky. I was studying in Barnes and Nobles yesterday. I took a break and picked up a book on Whisky. After reading about Irish Whisky, I'm fascinated with the traditional method of "pot stilling" non-blended.

Apparently, only two brands have survived - Green Spot and Redbreast. It seems like they are hard to find. Any obners tried this stuff?Thougthts ? Feelings?

If it's been distilled, and available in GA or AL, I have probably had at least a taste...that said, never heard of these brands, Tanner.

I just ordered this in for my dad's birthday:

Image

Quote:
Glen Breton Rare Canadian Single Malt Whisky - Glenora Distillery (Canada). An aromatic whisky presenting a pleasing golden-yellow colour highlighted with hints of amber and orange. The nose is medium-bodied, but pleasantly fiery, offering a tight combination of butterscotch, heather, honey and ground ginger with elongated, wood-infused undertones.

The flavor is light to medium-bodied with a noticeable alcohol expression. It's creamy with a good flow of toasty wood, almond, caramel and just the subtle suggestion of charcoal and earthy peat. The finish lingers, ending with a quick bite of light, raw wood. Adding a thimble full of spring water balances the initial hit of alcohol and softens the nose by bringing forward the fresh, fruit essence of orange, citrus and sweet grain.

The mix also fills in the back palate by adding a stronger impression of malt. Overall, Glenora Distillery has created a clean, expressive eight-year-old whisky with a well-defined edge of sophistication and an undeniable, one-of-a-kind flavour.

Tullamore Dew was my shot of choice from 2001-2003. Then my bar stopped carrying it and we drifted apart.

Funny this comes up, I almost went to the ABC store yesterday to pick up some Irish Whiskey and then it became too complicated so I decided to wait.

that's the thing. It's only been recently available in the US, and it's still rare to find.

Apparently, pot stilling is the "real" irish way, but the method died out b/c it's takes too long and is too labor intensive for mass consumption. So all the other Irish Brands switched to modern methods to keep up with Scotland and America. Basically at one point you could only find either brand in Dublin and both brands were about to go under. But they've made a comeback recently.

There not terribly expensive like 50 bucks.

I was able to find a fifth of Redbreast. I dropped 50 bucks on it but my word it is good. Smooth but with tons of flavor. Really one of the better whiskys I've ever tasted. Well worth it.

I had redbreast a couple of times in the late 90s, and like it alot, and yeah, i'm a huge tullamore dew fan. HUGE. I had forgot i'd ever even had it till this thread, thanks for the reminder, maybe it's easier to find now since people are getting more educated about their boozing, therefore distributors are carrying a wider variety of better stuff.

I wonder if there's an Irish American club here in Austin, cause I was a life time member on the East Side in Cleveland, and I've still got my card somewhere. It got me some preferential treatment in some of the irish pubs in Chicago too, after a bit of initial bluster, joking at my own expense, and buying the first round.

What scotches do you like? Shmoo is a scotch drinker if i remember.

I used to like the Highland Scotches like Dalwhinnie. But my tastes have changed of late and I've been gravitating towards Islays.

Shit is too expensive to buy a lot so I typically keep a blended Scotch on hand like Johnny Walker when I'm broke.

My choice, too.

On the cheap there are some good single malts out there.

I found 12 year(?) Dalmore at 30$ the other day. And a 10 year Glen for 25$ All good for a single malt.
