Caramel

Just saw this last night. Basically, it's Barbershop, but with beautiful Lebanese women. I'm dating a girl from Beruit right now so she was thrilled to see it. Pretty good and pretty funny and gentle introduction to the complex social/religious relationships that exist in Lebanon.

8.0 out of 10

Pic doesn't load, but I presume from its name that it's Tank Girl? You just got brownie points with someone whom you've never met, and hasn't met you (a friend of mine loves that movie).

I guess I need to see it.

Have you seen Cherry 2000?

I haven't really been watching movies lately. Just a lot of tv series on DVD/internet...

Image
Naruto... I'm around episode 190 or so. It's hard to keep track, really.

Image
Requiem From The Darkness... only 13 episodes and I'm about half-way through.

Image
Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade... I'm on episode 5 of 13. Perhaps might just be the greatest thing ever. Episode 2, in particular, destroyed me.

And season 1 of South Park. (To be followed by season 2, etc and so forth.)

yeah, i think so. isn't it the one about the man and his robot ho flying around the galaxy? (not to be confused with spaceballs, har har). i don't remember too much about it, except for melanie griffith. in my defense, it aired on USA's up all nite, and i'm quite sure i was beyond plastered at the time. i was always beyond plastered whenever i managed to catch up all nite.

(actually, i thought i recalled melanie being the android, but i just checked imdb, and i was mistaken. ah well. my memory aint what i remember it being.)

speaking of melanie's former ho... have ya seen a boy and his dog? (i'm sure you have). don johnson, looking scrawny, long-haired and downright adolescent. jason robards. apocalypse, telepathically-talky dogs, apple pie and insemination. god, i love that movie. it's just...tasty, it is.

we oughtta do a cult/midnight movie thread (she sez, knowing full well a hundred such threads have probably been done in the past. the hazards of noobiedom.)

just as a sidenote, i met jason robards once. he was the sweetest, sharpest, most well-spoken gentleman i ever did meet. he was very cool to me, even though i almost fell in his damn lap.

SHEFRAC forced me to sit through the DVD of Dan in Real Life last night. Two hours of Steve Carell as the world's biggest sad sack, topped with the shit cherry that is a heaping helping of Dane Cook. BLECH!

Something like that -- actually, it's a guy and Melanie Griffith traveling around a post-apocalyptic world looking for his robot ho.

And plastered was probably the best way to watch it. It's the movie equivalent of a hair metal band.

the footage of him as a child was worth the viewing alone.

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama

This film features the ten questions posed to His Holiness the Dalai Lama by filmmaker and explorer Rick Ray as he examines some of the fundamental questions of our time by weaving together observations from his own journeys throughout India and the Middle East, and the wisdom of an extraordinary spiritual leader. This is the Dali Lama's story, as told and filmed by Rick Ray during a private visit to his monastery in Dharamsala, India over the course of several months. Also included is rare historical footage as well as footage supplied by individuals who, at great personal risk, filmed with hidden cameras within Tibet. Part biography, part philosophy, part adventure and part politics, "10 Questions for The Dalai Lama" conveys more than history and more than answers - it opens a window into the heart of an inspiring man.

I'm waiting on this one, and anticipate the same reaction (substituting Zooey (?) for Fugit, of course)...

Netflix Weekend load:

Hitman (destined for either mediocrity or guilty pleasure status)
Conspiracy (Fat Kilmer, Direct-To-DVD, with a shotgun. I should've just given this a 5 star rating and bought it...)
Morvern Cavern (The Requisite "hang onto the arty movie for a while" movie)

I found it a bit of both, won't go into more detail until you've had a chance to see it and draw your own conclusions. I'd be curious as to your reactions.

I don't know how many of you have been following along with this, but Funny Games is being remade for US audiences by the same director, and essentially shot-for-shot. Of course I set out to see the original because in the unlikely chance that my local mall cineplex does get the Naomi Watts vehicle, I'd like to compare and contrast.

First off, this is a post-modernist's wet dream. Seriously. If you like Run Lola Run or those other 90s films that made you rethink cinema, then definitely check this out. If you are looking for a gorefest, stop and maybe rethink you're decision. Finally, if your idea of a thriller involves Morgan Freeman and any combination of Asheley Judd, Sandra Bullock, or Julianne Moore, you probably want to skip this completely. To call this an art-house thriller would be apt, I suppose. It certainly contained elements of the latter. There were points where you might be a little pushed to dig your fingernails into the couch just a little harder.

The big name on the box is Urlich Mühe, who you might remember from the amazing "The Lives of Others", but his performance is actually relatively low-key. He probably could've been swapped out with any number of other German/Austrian actors. In fact, at some points he even seemed a little miscast. Truth be told, the real gold should go to Arno Frisch, who's "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" performance not only resonates long after the film, but actually has you rooting throughout the film to see him in more scenes. Well, that and he has fantastically unreal chicken legs. Also clocking in some decent scenes was Susanne Lothar who played the wife. Naomi Watts has her moments, and Lord knows she can cry a river for a film, but Lothar had a certain dignity to her character that you feel come crumbling down when the fun(ny games) starts.

I'm not going to lie, this is a very simple film. This is the type of film that some smart indie filmmaker could've made for $500. Seriously. There is nothing to this, which for obvious reasons leads you down the road of the script being great. But it isn't. The dialog isn't fantastic (though Arno does some magic with what he's given), its rather the message that the vessel delivers which figures into the final punch. Much in the same way KIDS left you saying "oh shit", Funny Games might evoke the same response. I'm not saying its as blatantly as poignant, but it makes its point, and that point should taken and mulled over.

Thumbs up for using John Zorn as a soundtrack to brutality. Simply perfect. You have to love being surprised to hear Yamatsuka Eye come across your speakers.

I'll definitely be going to see the remake, or at least renting it when it hits the home video market.

Started out well enough, but the second half sucked. Can't believe it got nominated for Best Picture (but then again, I can't believe most of the others did either).

Image

Saw this for free last night, mostly because I'm a John C. Reilly fan. The beginning and ending were awful (nearly every joke fell flat for me), but the middle was some of the funniest shit I've seen in a movie recently. Overall it balances out to about a 2.5 out of 4 star movie, but there are worse ways to spend your time.

He did this one right after BOD with the same director.

Demi moore, the Piven and a Murray brother is in this.

Of the two, BOD comes out the winner.
