Heard a bit about this on NPR a couple weeks ago, with one theory being that the nature of joke telling has changed because of the Internet.
The format changes things drastically since what's funny in the verbal loses its punch in the written word, and vice versa.
Basically people only have to cut and paste to be considered funny, so there's not as much attention paid to the timing and phrasing you need to tell a joke to another person verbally.

Dunno if I buy that completely, but I think there's something to it.
