Peeping Tom is fantastic, assuming you mean the Michael Powell one from 1960.

It's pretty amazing he was able to make that movie back then, but then it did pretty much ruin his career.

Wasn't very good. Gretchen Mol's acting lacked depth. The story really wasn't interesting as it could have been

Yeah, agreed. This was beyond horrible. Its like how can you make a film about Bettie Page uninteresting, and for the most part uninspired? Somehow the filmmakers found not only a way to do so.

Wendigo was alright. Kinda arty horror with some creepy scenes. Looked good for what seemed to be a pretty low budget.

It is my understanding that Shogun Assassin is essentially the first two movies.

I waited until Borders had that 30% DVD box set sale (didn't know they were going to do the 40% off one about a month later, oh well), and then used some of my "Borders Rewards" bucks -- total outlay was ~ US$50. Worth it. I don't know if it's worth it at the full US$150 that Borders was selling it for, but it's certainly worth watching at least once.

I love some of the titles: Baby Cart at the River Styx, Baby Cart in Peril, Baby Cart in Hades, and Baby Cart in the Land of Demons.

My friend has Zatoichi, I need to get him to start watching those next.

I just got done with the Final baby Cart flick last night and man, that box set was some good shit. I had shogun assassin(yes it is a mesh of the 1st 2 flicks) for a bunch of years now, and have seen it several times..But I never looked for the whole series..To think those flicks were from 72-73 is pretty nuts..Zatoichi is pretty good I only have the first in the series and the one that came to the states a few years back. Both are pretty good.

A funny, and well-written account of a con-artist, just happens to be severely likable despite his lying, cheating ways. As far as "black cinema" goes, this doesn't play by the numbers at all, and in many ways far exceeds even the works of Spike Lee. The only thing I can liken it to is the work of Charles Burnett, whose work is equally as important, yet lost among larger names. There's certainly an artsy, independent edge to this, which might lose some viewers, but I think if you hold through you'll find yourself enjoying Doug Street. Filmed in 89, this film won the Grand Jury Prize-Drama at Sundance in 1990. Its really a shame that Wendell Harris isn't making films today.

I was wrong about my friend having Zatoichi, I had to get it myself.

Still working my way through Baby Cart (which is how someone else referred to it) -- I haven't had a whole lot of time to myself to watch whole movies lately. I'll probably watch one tomorrow.

Speaking of ultra-violent -- does anyone know of any Lee Marvin/James Coburn -era war movies that were completely over-the-top? The only thing I definitely remember is that there was scene after scene of guys getting shot up by machine-gun fire in slow motion with exaggerated gouts of blood with each shot. I mean the budget on squibs alone must have been higher than most of the crew's individual salaries.

Also: it (the big gunfight scene) was set in the daytime. Also: high-budget. Also: lots of extras. D-Day-type scene. So it's not Dirty Dozen, I don't think.

It might be Big Red One, but I'm going to have to watch that one to be sure.

eh yeah. If that topline doesn't make you want to see this film. Seriously though, this is really fractured, pompous, and horribly convoluted--yet I don't feel completely turned off by it. I'm not going to lie though. I've heard such horrible, terrible things about this film and its 2 & half hours that the burden of following up Donnie Darko was seemingly lifted off its shoulders. I went thinking the worse. Expecting a film whose very existence I questioned.

What we have here is RK knowing no bounds, and perhaps having a bit of Lucasian power. There just seemed like no stop gap. No one there to say "eh, Mr. Kelly...maybe The Rock's performance in that scene needs to be reworked." That's really the problem with hotshot, 2nd time out directors--broadly generalized. They get everything they want and no one questions their motivations. Thusly, Kelly lays out upon us such a dense (opposite of "2001" good dense) storyline that has too many here and theres to follow, or even care about.

I mentioned it being pompous. See, there's this whole satirical thing going on and while that can be appreciate on some level, the film seems to mock the same satire and seemingly says "see what what I did there, didja didja?". Its a complex that perhaps is just my jaded mind reacting to another post-911 film. Civil liberties be damned, the film pulls no punches at mocking everything from controlled internet, personal id cards, and yes the ever present Patriot Act.

Thats not even to talk about the whole underlying Book of Revelations mixed drink that being served up. Appropriately moderated by one Mr. Justin Timberlake, who ironically enough is probably the best actor out of the bunch. Red flag Red flag.

There's a bunch of ballyhoo about dimensions and whatnot, and things that seemed eerily familiar to those of us who really enjoyed Donnie Darko. Really the thing is, it has modus operandi, but it falls short. Given to another screenwriter to slim down, tone it, etc this could've been a brilliant film. This is why I'm not completely turned off from it. I'll probably never watch it again, or if I do its gonna be with the (as of right now) non-existent director commentary.

Also of note, the film starts at chapter 4. There are 3 accompanying graphic novels that apparently explain some more about what is going on as well, plus a very heavily designed website.

I saw Deja Vu with Denzel Washington last night. I only vaguely remember when this came out, I think it was in and out of theaters fairly quickly.

As expected, it wasn't very good but it was free On Demand and my girlfriend and I watched it at 2:00am last night so it served its purpose.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it but I don't feel like I need those two hours back either.

The only thing that makes I Am Legend bad is the *awful* CGI.

Well, that and the shit-tacular final act.

SWEENEY TODD - Mediocre. Liked the fucked up concept, but the film was mostly a bore.

CONTROL - I'm not the world's biggest fan of Joy Division, but this was very good.

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH - Started off well, ended well. The middle felt like six thousand movies I've seen before.

Visiting my parents this weekend. I usually use this as an opportunity to catch up on some animated movies.

We saw Horton Hears a Who! today, and we all really liked it. It looked great and was generally well done. There's really not much separating Blue Sky from Pixar now in terms of the quality of the animation and art direction.

Last night we watched Bee Movie which my parents had rented. I... noticed some factual inaccuracies...

...seriously, though, it just didn't quite work. It was either too absurd or not absurd enough, and Jerry Seinfeld isn't a very good voice actor. I wasn't crazy about the character design with the bees, and most of the human characters in the movie were pretty blah. I wouldn't recommend it.
