I liked his first album. I haven't kept up with him since.

And aren't there a million other artists that warrant abuse ahead of Devendra?

Rejoicing in the Hands is pretty OK but didn't have much staying power.

I knew there was a good reason I now avoid Pitchfork.

i like him. each album definitely has a handful of throwaway tracks, but in between there are some really great songs. seahorse, from last years album, might be his best yet:

plus he has a killer beard.

While we're discussing artists featured on Pitchfork today....

Madonna is a talentless, poxy old skank. Discuss.

don't hijack my thread :) I LOVE Madonna and she is 100% more important/talented (if only for her business acumen though I enjoy her music)/influential than the contrived Hare Krisna wanna be

Devendra Banhart is contrived, yet somehow Madonna isn't.

Madonna is impossible to argue over. It's like arguing over religion.

I've never heard a better reason to steal someone's music.

I honestly like him. I don't have anything past Rejoicing in the Hands. I'm not sure anything isn't contrived. How could you dare say Madonna isn't contrived?

I prefer Madonna when she doesn't make music and just poses for pictures with things shoved up her ass and getting head from dogs.

I didn't say Madonna wasn't contrived. But she has never been more than pure mainstream pop. She has always been that way.

So you can be contrived if you desire to make pop music as opposed to indie rock? Not sure I really understand the distinction.

It's okay to be fake if everyone expects fakery? Well, I for one don't expect Banhardt to live in the woods. Actually, he's talked about this. He said he used to hate Street Fighting Man because he knew that Mick Jagger wasn't going to take the streets and start knocking folks around. But then he later realized that its all sort of fantasy anyway, and that it's okay for it not to be "real"
