This was better than I thought it would be. Worth a rental.

Agreed. I saw it last month and liked it a lot.

Upcoming Pinewood Studio viewings include The Golden Compass (love the Pullman books and the National Theatre's stage version) and The Assassination of Jesse James.

This is probably true, but I don't think he completely went and made it a character study, which is why it took me most of the film to figure that out, and by the time I did, it was practically over. If I had gone in knowing this, I might've mentally prepared myself and been able to enjoy it more, as I really don't mind slowly paced films in general. I listen to post-rock, fer pete's sake.
Oh, I wasn't calling you stupid or anything, I'm just saying that, at least in my eyes, they made it intentionally slow because JJ was always seen as a daring, action-star of the West, and in reality he had slow points just like any other man on earth. On a whole, it wasn't even really about JJ, he just became a vessel to tell the story of Robert Ford. Its one of the reasons why I felt, as you mentioned, Casey Affleck was so understated. He really nailed the role. At least he got nominated for an Oscar--not JJ, but I'm just quabbling on that fact.
No probs, I didn't take it that way...wait...should I have? j/k...

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I realize that they did make it an out-and-out character study. It just took me most of the film to realize it. I don't feel bad, because the two people I watched it with are serious film aficionados, and I wasn't the only one (who didn't figure it out).

It doesn't do much good to show us what you've watched unless you say something about it. Even if it's just one sentence like most of mine.

I think I'd put this in the top 20 of the decade. I thought it was excellent.

I mean, maybe not if I really sat down and thought about it. I thought it was top 3 of that year though, whenever it came out, so it's likely. I've only seen it once though.

I really liked it. Top 20 of 2000s? Maybe top 100, but top 20 is pretty high. It was well-shot, a good translation of the book, and Kate Winslet is an amazing actress. Not to mention whats his name--the pedophile who was fantastic as well.

Finally saw Michael Clayton. It was decent. I thought it would be a bit more fast paced or suspenseful.

I don't know what you bed pan drinkers expected out of a gangster film with Denzel and Rusell Crow, but it was New Jack City + Blow. Gangster by numbers, but the over the top performances and Horatio Alger aspect of the whole thing kept me entertained.

I enjoyed it along the same lines. I can't wait to see it again actually.

I suppose it was fine if you are just looking for mindless entertainment, and could care less that the genre is peppered with far, far superior films. I mean, the thing is this could've been amazing. On paper it has the makings of a classic. Look at the cast, director, and story for chrissakes! When you look at all of that and see how it turned out, you cannot help but shake your head and rue the 2+ hours you spent viewing it.

Somehow I guess I knew that you can only tell the same story so many times, and also knew it would be New Jack + Blow -- it's really the only way to tell the story.

I don't know what else you would want from the main character's performance. And, I guess Ridley could have put an Island-Dope smoking interlude like Papillon, or intercut some really cool Eno songs, but I don't know what any of that would have added up to a better, more entertaining film.
