Well in that case...

The beatles are the best ever, because I said so. Neener neener neener.

Now I really want Live at Leeds to come into this thread and destroy it.

dude, don't be so hard on The Who... Live at Leeds is pretty decent actually, even if it shows how much better the rest of the band was compared to Daltrey who was easily the chink in the armor.

I think this is part of the problem that makes the statement/question moot. We are habituated to the Beatles; not so the Kinks. Also, it is hard to evaluate a piece of culture that fundamentally permeates and influences directly or indirectly most if not all rock and related genre music.

absolutely. I am a massive Who fan, yet I still can't stand Daltry. I'm sorta the same way about Mick, though.

I can tolerate Daltrey, partly because Townsend, Moon, and Entwistle are so fucking good, but I can't tolerate Jagger's voice. Yet I love Dylan's voice.

There is no explanation, why try? I hate pickles and black licorice too, i must be a communist.

The Who frustrate me because they made some amazing songs and some horrible albums.

The Kinks are fine for what they are -- a sub entry in a "Stuff White People Like" entry about obscure British music. I like about 7 of their songs. You may as well rave on about the subtexts of English Life contained in Herman's Hermits lyrics.

The Beatles are too awesome to wholly digest.

The Stones are all ID. Drink, Fuck, Come, Leave.

The Who are amazing in their own right, but only compare to the Stones and Beatles because they are contemporaries in the first wave of British Invasion.

No, I think everything they did from Village Green to Come Dancing were million sellers that your average music lover can recall deep album cuts from.

Either that or they will recognize "You Really Got Me" and "that really cool song in the HP commercial.

However you wanna carry it.

Listening to this right now:

And, you know, every time I listen to these guys I hear something new in their songs:
a chord change that I didn't hear before
a lyric
a harmony

Kerry said it. And, I just wanted to say it, while I was listening.
Ray Davies is as good as (maybe better than) Dylan. And Dave is an incredibly underrated songwriter, himself.
It's a crime that I don't own more of their discography.

That BBC collection is damn good. Which proper albums do you have, Todd?

Kinks Kontroversy
Kinda Kinks
Face To Face
Something Else
Are the Village Green Preservation Society
Lola vs. the Powerman
Muswell Hillbillies

and, I also have The Kink Kronikles, which is a pretty good collection, even though I already have most of the songs on there.
