Alicia Keys says gangsta rap was ploy to get 'black people to kill each other'

She blames government, media

04:28 PM CDT on Saturday, April 12, 2008

In a potentially controversial chat with Blender mag, Alicia Keys, 27, says, “Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. Gangsta rap didn’t exist.”

Ms. Keys, sporting a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck, says she has been reading books by some of the members of the Black Panthers.

She says the feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers, which led to the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., was fueled “by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing.”

The singer is not available for comment, her rep says.

She's like Lisa Bonet and Halle Barry trying to be Mariah while the meds only work part of the time.

And I love her for it.

Conspiracy theories have the wonderful ability to absolve you of any responsibility.

Well, so much for Alicia.

The white genes are keeping the ghetto booty in check, but the black genes are going straight for the frontal lobe.

All of this supposes that Tupac is dead.

This is what happens to pop stars who have been molded and groomed from day one. In her case by Clive Davis. They are usually extremely vanilla in interviews, etc. and have been coached as to how to act and what to say.

She read a couple of books and now all of a sudden she thinks she's smart.

As far as pop stars go I actually kind of like her vibe and do think she's very talented.

As far as things to get worked up about this rates well below me running out of hot water in the shower.

Jesus, Derris I'd hope so. I pretty much go fucking bananas if the hot water runs out mid-shower. Like, day is ruined and I'm gonna take it out on everybody.

Anyway, Sista Souljah here is entitled to an opinion.

All this does is make me long for the days when the American government was preoccuppied with keeping the brothers down instead of killing arabs and keeping the mexicans out.

I have hated her from the first not I ever heard, and especially the first time I heard her voice.

She reminds me of Kobe when he first got into the league -- talked dumber and acted dumber than they ever were - she was a prodigy who was accepted to Columbia, who sounded like the drive through chick at Wendy's around the corner.

She also traffics in the blandest of the bland music, and is generally reprehensible and devoid of redeeming qualities. (Along with having no talent she is ugly as homemade sin.)

I think we will find that this a plot to drive record sales or relevance. When making controversial remarks, it helps when they are actually controversial, and not nonsense.

As Squrg said -- conspiracy theory helps absolve people of responsibility.

i wouldn't say she has no talent. she's got a good voice, just that most of her songs are about on the same level of output as people from american idol. i do like that no one song by her though.

i find her music bland and forgettable, but when she talks in interviews with that ridiculous "ghetto" accent of hers i want to stick a knife in my ear.
