I am driving to different locations for work every day, and I'm getting tired of writing out my stops by hand with google maps (don't have a printer). I'm looking to spend anywhere from $250-$500.

there you go, iphone. i mean, it won't talk to you, or let you talk to it, but you'll have mapquest.

i don't know if you can use voice commands for it though, because i find that kind of weird.

We just recently got the Garmin Nuvi 660 and took it with this on our recent trip up north: I can safely report that it kicks ass. Recommended.

same one i got, and yeah, works perfectly. even got us way up in the mountains in South Carolina, nailing the vacation house dead on. there are so signs, so it's pretty hard to find without a GPS.

That Garmin 660 was one of the ones I was checking out at Best Buy's website. I'll give it a look when I go in there later today.

Dalen & Bloor, do you know if it has a route builder? I usually have 4-6 stops in a day, and I'd like to be able to program them all in the night before so it can just take me from store to store.

I'll third the Garmin GPS. I've never owned one but after my experience with one driving to and from Florida a couple weeks ago I'm thinking about getting one.

It was accurate down to a few meters and got us through all of those small south Alabama towns.

If I had an extra three bills laying around, this is the one I would go for. I might cash in my change at coinstar and see if I can get a $100 "discount" ;)

<----- One of them LOST

Am I correct in that there is no monthly service for these things either?

Just the hardware, installation, and you're good?

that doesn't sound right. i'm sure they'd want to charge you for map updates and whatever else.

There's one that's i think the 680 that comes with some kind of subscription service, but it's not even available in Montgomery, and looks kind of janky anyway.

Maybe Prof. Bloor can enlighten us?

this was on the garmin website

Quote:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

Also, I just noticed that you can store up to 500 (!) waypoints, favorites or locations so yeah, i'd say you could easily build your route.

One more thing if you do buy a Garmin (Dale, this may apply to you too): I really like this mount for your car--it really fucking works and its easy to move to another vehicle.

thanks for the heads up on that. we usually just have it set up on the dash, but it slides from time to time, so this is something we need.
