The rumors of "Shake the Sheets" mediocrity are greatly exagerrated. I think it has now become my favorite Ted Leo album.

I think part of the reason this didn't get as enthusiastic of a reaction from me at first was the lack of variety in terms of instrumentation, guitar sound, etc. But this is just 3 guys layin' down a genius rock and roll album with no bells and whistles. And not only is that a great thing in and of itself, but it also sort of complements the DIY protest message of the album.

I got it off CC and liked what I heard, but I have never heard other recorded Ted Leo output. I've only seen him in concert a few times. He kind of sounded like Elvis Costello on STS to me, though I know very little of Costello.

I've only heard 'Me & Mia' and liked it enough to put it on a mix. I'm a big fan of ToD and enjoyed HoO quite a bit, but I haven't picked this up (yet) since reading the most recent Ted Leo thread.

Could I possibly be even more vague?

Its pretty mediocre. Its definitely not bad, but why spend an additional $11.99 on this when you could add something new and different to your collection? Tyranny and Hearts can nicely round out your Ted Leo diaspora.

Repeat the same for the new Doves album.

The fact that Shake the Sheets is Ted Leo's third best album is more a testament to his brilliance as an artist, as opposed to an indictment of this album. It's very good, and so is Leo. Hearts of Oak is even better, and The Tyranny of Distance is damn near perfect.

Shake the Sheets is the only Ted Leo I own thus far, but I love it. So this means once I purchase past albums, I should be even happier, right?

YES...

And, yes, "Shake" is my least favorite of his solo albums but, after listening to it again this morning, it's not all that bad...

I ordered all three from Lookout at exactly the same time.

RANK!

1. Shake the Sheets
2. Tyranny
3. Hearts of Oak

Shake and Tyranny have gotten loads of play but I really don't listen to Hearts of Oak too much.

Chisel just doesn't do much for me, although I've never heard that album (but I have their other one). I saw them live in '94 or '95 and was less than impressed, and I think it tainted my view of them forever.

Same here. I caught Chisel's 8AM All Day tour back in '96-'97 and was bored to tears. The new wave-y sound just didn't bode well for the unit - they didn't even seem comfortable playing their own music. Before Stone's comment, I thought I'd been missing out on tour Set You Free.

Then again, we don't see eye-to-eye on Husker Du.

too bad the guy is the best dude in indie rock.

shake the sheets: #2 of 2004 on my list. Even though it's not on my Top 30 of the half decade. (Tyranny is though)

I really dig sheets. That said, the albums are like children, each with their charms and who am I to rank? My only ted-related gripe is that at his fabulous gig they only had shirts in XL, which is nightie sized for me, and while I think he's great, I don't really know him well enough to take him to bed.
