OK- I'm driving to work this morning, and I turn on KEXP its their pledge drive, so they usually really play some great stuff during this week. Some song is on that sounds like a band I was in back in about 7th grade (not in a good way). I check the playlist when I arrive at work, and its a song called Four Kicks by Kings of Leon.

Now, I have always found them to be mostly unoriginal and a bit poseurish, but this was truly terrible- bad songwriting, terrible vocals, bad musicianship the whole bag.

What am I missing here? People are calling them a great rather than good band. My only other exposure to this record was the song The Bucket which I found to be mostly boring, but unoffensive- this was terrible, are there any redeeming qualities to this band?

Just got the new album.
It's okay.

The first one, however, kicks my ass. Check out Youth and Young Manhood and tell me if you still feel that way.

I guess this is just "one of those bands" where some people fucking hate them or love them. I don't get the deep rooted prejudice some people seem to put out with respect to this band. Maybe it's the faux-southern thing or something that annoys people. When I put on Kings of Leon, I don't give a shit what the hell they're singing about, but I like it. It's kind of like making fun of the Ramones' lyrics for being dumb and juvenile. Does anyone listen to some of these bands for the lyrics or superb musicianship?

Can you be faux-southern when you are, in fact, Southern?

I meant faux-Southern rock, I do realize they are from Tennessee or thereabouts.

I still can't seem to like the new album. Their first album eventually grew on me. To me, they're just an okay rock band. They will never be in the same league as say, bands like, Blonde Redhead or The Delgados.

I love King of the Rodeo. Heard it again on KEXP this morning.

Heck i might even buy the album because of it.
