understatement of the year.

fuck juno. it was just trying way too hard to show how cool and "indie" it was and the script was fucking atrocious because no one fucking talks like that.

seriously, i enjoyed once more than that.

i loved it and i know it had kind of the same type of wordplay in it but it just felt so natural in brick while this seemed like the screenwriter just wrote a normal screenplay and then went to town with a synonym/antonym dictionary.

I feel like both of the movies work because they give the audience two precepts:

1) Kids don't talk like adults, and
2) Kids that talk like kids are annoying to adults

Juno--I liked it. If only because the Micheal Cera character reminds me of myself in high school. And Juno would indeed be the girl that I would completely fall for. Otherwise, the dialoge was indeed annoying. The "honest to blog" made me wince. I did think the movie was a little more emotionally complex than I expected. 3/5 stars.

John Carpenter's The Thing--I've seen this movie a million times and it never gets old. Kurt Russell's best role in my opinion and I think he's a pretty underrated actor. 5/5 stars.

My Morning Jacket Okonos--Very good concert DVD. Great selection of their songs. The sound is less than perfect though. 4/5 stars.

I Am Legend--Oh how I fucking hated this one. Terrible plot. Terrible CGI effects. Terrible acting. Wasted source material. Shitty Christian influenced ending. And plot holes that you could drive a truck through. 1/5 stars.

I still have to finish There Will Be Blood and I have Cloverfield arriving in the mail today.

The Indian Runner

Sean Penn scribed/directorial debut starring David Morse & Viggo. Based on the Springsteen song "Highway Patrolman". Turning a 4 minute song into a 2 hour film is tough. Viggo is great, and Morse is simply ok. I wonder if anyone else noticed Bronson's coke finger. Anyway, yeah, its long, drawn-out, and probably not a late night movie if yr wanting to kept awake. Slow burner for sure. Good though with definite nods to John Cassavettes.

We have 'There Will Be Blood' sitting on our TV for the last week. We will hopefully watch it this weekend.

Got "Mostly Martha" off of Netflix. Sat on the TV for a month before I watched it, but got around to it the other night.

It was a great 'food' movie (not as good as "The Big Night" though) Otherwise it was a nice foreign film with a feel good ending.

Saw "Cars" and "Robots" on the plane ride back from England. I quite enjoyed both.

Watched The Last Detail last night. It was strange to see Randy Quaid in a role like this. I see his face and all I can think of is the Amish dude in Kingpin. It wasn't outstanding, but I enjoyed it.

the movie was actually not crazy awesome, it was a mess.

the interview with the director is pretty great though. he trashes the movie, new line, jan michael-vincent and himself.

Mentioned in another thread, but enjoyed Wristcutters over the weekend. Nice use of Tom Waits in a movie and nothing earth shattering, but quite enjoyable in a bit of an oddball way. Plot revolves around the afterlife for suicide victims...which is basically a world just like the real one...just everything's a little worse and everyone's pretty much of a downer and a fuckup, as would be expected by a world inhabited by suicide victims.

Watched Wristcutters yesterday as well. Thought it was really pretty original and funny at times. And oh, how I had missed seeing Shannyn Sossamon in movies. 8/10.

Also watched ATL which was taped off HBO. It was actually a lot more goofy than I thought it would be, but tried to cram too much storyline into the movie to become more of a "sprawling urban dramedy." 5/10

The Station Agent

Quiet and quirky for the sake of being quirky (not, say, Garden State quirk, though, much more subtle), but endearing and sweet.

"Before The Devil Knows You're Dead"

I hated this. I found this snippet on metacritic and it summed up my thoughts nicely:

... good acting, but not an enjoyable movie. This is an ugly movie in tone and essence, ultimately meaningless, which seemed to be the theme. I didn't care about the characters one whit, and the directorial drive towards pointless tragedy told without any kind of vision left me feeling like I was abused by the film. I pity the poor actors forced to live those characters for however long the project look.

With that said, naked Marisa Tomei was a nice side benefit.
