This is one of my favourite bands. Cannot wait for this record to come out.

All the details.

Call it rigor mortis: spry punkers the Death Set are alive and well and putting out a whole bunch of music in the coming months. Ninja Tune offshoot Counter Records will issue the Death Set's full-length debut, Worldwide, April 7 in the UK and April 22 in North America.

Before that happens, though, there's a Counter single for album cut "MFDS" due in the UK February 11 and February 26 in digital form in North America, plus an etched 7" for "Around the World" coming to North America in March (exact date TBA). What's more, a video for "Negative Thinking" is already floating around. Couldn't settle on a single track to showcase the sound, could you, fellas? That's a nice problem to have.

This deadly combo will perform many a set over the next few months as well, with a huge tour hitting the U.S. soon and Europe and the UK sooner. They have plans to show themselves off at SXSW, though a couple dead dudes playing music is probably gonna draw a crowd no matter where they are.

Worldwide:

01 Solve It
02 Listen to This Collision
03 Negative Thinking
04 Intermission
05 Spaz
06 Cold Teeth
07 Around the World

yeah i love this band. they used to just have 2 guitarists and play their backing tracks off an ipod, which they still do but now they're rounded out by an actual drummer. and i think they've actually gotten sloppier.

The record is out now, and getting a lot of well-warranted love, including this endorsement from all-trusted All Music Guide:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... fixzwjldje

4 stars!

Review by Jo-Ann Greene

Back in the late '70s, the Dickies set the punk scene ablaze with their zippy music and destructo-covers of pop/rock icons. The Death Set speed along in their footsteps, scathing through punk/post-punk much like the Dickies cleaved through the '60s. Their debut full-length album, Worldwide, gives a shot of amphetamines to the blank generation, and although the group don't actually cover anything from that era, they don't have time to, they're too busy stomping deliriously over the grave with their own songs. All 18 of them, packed into a set that runs less than 30 minutes. In short order they steamroll over synth pop and its more experimental brethren, demolish the first generation U.K. punk bands and many of their off-spring, take an axe to art-punk, lay waste to the new wave, and ravish the New Romantics. The tracks fly by so fast it's almost impossible to keep up. But that's the fun of this set, for the energy never flags and the joie de vivre never slackens. "Intermission" is obviously Death Set's theme song, a frenetic mix of shout-along vocals and sweeping New Romantic synths. But that's just one of the dozen or so anthems within, others include the digitized delight of "Around the World," the hip-hoppy "Impossible," the hardcore slam of "Day in the Wife," the blistering pop of "Moving Forward," and the punky punch of "Heard It All Before." You'll find your own favorites soon enough for amazingly, considering the inexorable tempo, there's nothing slap or dash about this set, which is as tightly wound as a watch spring.

That "Negative Thinking" song sounds a little like The Mae Shi.

Which isn't really a good or bad thing for me.

You can stream the whole album right here:

http://www.counterrecords.com/thedeathset/

user: deathsetpromo
pass: balt1m0r3

The annoyance of streaming is minimized by how brief the album, and that you can stream the album in one go. Just to give you an idea.

Live they're amazing fun, and that energy successfully comes off on record.

QUOTES:

"Synthesizing electro-pop and breakneck rock, this delirious band is everything punk should be--and a lot of things punk could be." -- Nick Marino, Paste

". . . the Death Set rock out a la Looney Tunes- maniacal, colorful and giddy." -- Spencer Kornhaber, SPIN

". . . grabs punk nostalgia by the shoulders and pulls it back into the pit." -- SPIN

". . . they steamroll over synth pop and its more experimental brethren, demolish the first generation U.K. punk bands and many of their off-spring, take an axe to art-punk, lay waste to the new wave, and ravish the New Romantics." -- Jo-Ann Green, All Music Guide

". . .a curiously enraptured transmission from the Apocalypse, while the nervy synth-shuffle of "Superzero" imagines Giorgio Moroder meeting Fad Gadget over six pots of coffee." -- Todd Lavoie, SF Bay Guardian

"Between the limb-twisting throwdowns and the sing-along fist-pumpers, Worldwide has enough attitude to reawaken your long-lost inner punk — or at least make you wish he hadn't sold out so soon." -- Andrew Phillips, Earplug

"The thrashers on the Death Set's debut LP, Worldwide, hold up as well at a party as they do in the pit." -- Andrew Phillips, Earplug

". . . a compelling, pummeling danceable anthem." -- Paperthinwalls

So I picked this up a few weeks ago and am digging it. Sort of reminds me of Les Georges Leningrad and Miss Violetta Beauregarde.

Predictably, my gamma foxtrot did not enjoy listening to it during a short ride in my car last night.

I dunno...I guess it was the lack of memorable songs (they all kinda sounded the same to me) coupled with the "hey, lets just see how rambunctious we can be on stage" attitude.

When I was 14-16 I would have thought they were the greatest band ever.
