Yes, I did post this in the mix forum, and got 3 good responses, however Finch Platte suggested I mosey over her to post it, and see if I could get more input. For the previous thread, go here: http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3965

For background info:

Okay, so I'm always making mix cd's for friends and relatives, but very rarely make one for my husband. The reason being-- he's not really into a lot of the music I like, so it's hard for me to find things he *does* like. If I gave y'all a list of the bands I know for a fact he likes, could you suggest some newer/recent bands I can check out? Any input would be helpful!

Ministry (Thieves/Mind is a Terrible... era)
Godflesh
Pink Floyd
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
most hardcore/punk (older Fugazi, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, DK's, Nausea, old Misfits, older Bad Religion, etc... seems to prefer the older SoCal punk to English punk)
A Perfect Circle
Tool
System of a Down
Concrete Blonde
Peter Murphy/Bauhaus
Delta blues (Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters-- doesn't like any of the newer stuff)
Mozart
Mento (got the Mento Madness cd for Christmas and loved it)
Bob Marley

I did find one band he really liked recently... Death from Above 1979. The man is difficult to buy for sometimes. I usually have to know in advance of something he's really been seeking, however, I'd like to turn him on to some new stuff.

Help me! Please!

edit: based on some of the prior responses, here's the deal:
QOTSA - he likes him, but he'd rather listen to Fu Manchu if he's going to listen to stoner rock
Love and Rockets - he likes them, and we've got several albums
Cap'n Deez-- I think I remember him telling me one time that he *didn't* like DRI, but it's been awhile.

oops, one more to add to the "he likes" list: David Bowie... preferably older stuff, but he will listen to the newer stuff.

If he likes Bowie, he should check out Bobby Conn and The Glass Gypsies.

The Marley fan in him would probably appreciate Peter Tosh.

If he likes Mozart, you can ease him into Beethoven, then work chronologically up to, say Shostakovitch. Or you can just give him Shostakovitch Sym #5, Finale, which is a pretty awesome piece.

Depending on what Bowie he likes, he may also dig some T. Rex (early 70s Bowie) and Brian Eno (late 70s Bowie) pop stuff.

He might like Dungen since he likes Hendrix. And most people seem to like Dungen anyway.

I agree with Derris's Minutemen and Gang of Four suggestions. Maybe not the Fall, though. I like them , but they can be an acquired taste. You might be able to get away with something off of their mid-80s, more pop albums.

He might like Isis on the Tool, sorta modern metal tip. If they seem kinda boring to him, maybe try Mastodon.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions... believe it or not, he preferred the Replacements over Husker Du... never got into them for whatever reason.

I'll look and see if I can find the others you are suggesting... this helps immensely!

These are GREAT... I've been sampling a few, and here's what I know he will like:

Oceansize
Porcupine Tree
Lightning Bolt
Dag Nasty (who knows... he may have some of this that I wasn't aware of since there seems to be a Dischord connection)

I'm still searching/listening to everyone's suggestions.

fyi:
Yes, he likes Pigface, and had one of their albums at some point (was also into RevCo during the early 90s)
Fear Factory-- no, not his style
The Futureheads-- everytime I play this, he seriously asks me if this some Adam and the Ants redux, i.e. he doesn't like it
Gang of Four -- I never forced this upon him... I don't know though. I like it!
Definitely already a Helmet and Black Flag fan

He's got the strangest tastes sometimes... and I thought I was picky! :D

Error Burn In Hell

It's Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion, Greg Pucicato from Dillinger Escape Plan and some dudes that used to work with Trent Reznor. You can check out some songs here but I don't know if they're downloadable but I'm sure you can find them on slsk.

For Delta Blues I always recommend Tommy McLennan

If he likes early period Pink Flloyd I'd suggest Tomorrow

For a Bob Marley alternative I'd give you Sylford Walker

Try out some Dukes of the Stratosphere AKA XTC for psychedelica
try some Masters of Reality for that semi-classic rock vibe
attempt some Nebula/Kyuss for that burnt-out stoner Fuzz

and cant really help ya on the new Metal - most of it bores me.

hey DALEN!

The hubby really loved the Anathema song you sent me a while back... any more stuff you can share with me?

Also, everyone thanks for your input... I think I've gotten him interested in:
Porcupine Tree
Refused
Juno <-- on first listen, he said these guys reminded him of Samiam

Things he wasn't so into:
Mars Volta <-- these guys strike me as an "acquired taste"
Opeth

just zip up all of the files and then upload it...zipping it up prevents you from having to upload 10 or 15 files with 10 or 15 e-mails sent out
