Streaming Netflix movies to your TV. Gets a great review from Wired.

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/05/r ... u-net.html

The great thing for current customers is the cost: $100 for the box, and then $0 a month extra. That’s right -- if you have an "unlimited" Netflix plan, you can stream as many movies as you like for the same flat fee you’re already paying.

I was just going to post something on this. I'm definietely getting this. The only real drawback is that not all the movies on Netflix are available for instantaneous viewing. Only about 1/10 their catalog. Still, a $100 one time fee is hard to pass up.

Smart move by Netflix.

Video on demand is the future. Just as netflix turned the video rental business upside down, VOD will change the business of video distribution. Without moving into the VOD market, Netflix would go the way of Blockbuster and Movie Gallery.

yeah and I thought it only works with a PC? I streamed a movie once and had to watch on my roommate's computer. Boo!

this is different from the streaming-to-your-computer service. looks like all you need is internet access.

There has been a rumored collab with Xbox 360 that I hope does the same thing without purchasing the Netflix box.

This is going to your television, I believe. Not your computer.

Also, within 5-10 years I am sure more than just 1/10 of catalogs will be available, especially after The Grid (pardon the FoxNews link) becomes available for broad consumer use.

EDIT: Invest in Cisco because they're taking over the damn world! :)

maybe it's only 1/10 but they have how many titles? 100,000? i'll "settle" for 10,000 options. . . they automatically mark the selections in your queue with the "watch now" option and there's plenty of them on my list.

here's my question. . . does the xbox or the netflix box have wifi capability? because i'll be damned if i'm gonna unplug and reset my dsl modem everytime i want to switch from internet to netflix.

linky

Great start. I guess Netflix is promising more titles and HD later. Their instant viewing selection is surprisingly shitty at this point. I'm cool with anything that takes on cable companies.

I haven't looked into this, but if it doesn't play content from other *sources* then you really don't want it.

i disagree. There will always be a niche market for a physical product, just like there is a niche market for vinyl right now.

I am with Dalen on this if we're talking "major source of revenue".

I don't see why this matters. If you're streaming video from Netflix (as opposed to waiting for the DVD in the mail) to watch a movie "on demand" and it comes from netflix through the internets to the box to your television screen, why would its capability to play other source's material matter? You're not downloading, you're streaming for instant gratification purposes. If Netflix is your main source of renting videos already, I don't see why this would be a bad idea. Maybe I am misunderstanding your point.

Are you talking about the Soundbridge or Photobridge? If it's the Soundbridge, I'm surprised by your comment - it's arguably my favorite part of my entertainment system. I use it for several hours every day (currently listening to Sirius), and just think it's a great piece of technology.

if having instant access to every movie has the same effect on my enjoyment of them as having instant access to every album has, then i guess i won't really enjoy anything anymore.

exactly right.

also, you'll no longer need to burn any dvd's because they'll be there for you to watch any time you wish. no waiting, no need to buy blank dvd's.

as their collection of streaming films grows, so does yours, without any extra cost.

for $100 investment you gain thousands of films. thanks Netflix.
