I am almost ready to switch over to dickhoodism. Short version of a long story...I had this "friend/work associate" who asked me to do him a favor and cash a few checks for him. Stupidly, I agreed to cash them for him. He seemed like a nice guy plus I worked with him so I knew where to find him. Anyway, the check came back and the money was deducted from my checking account. He had since left the job where I am working but I have his phone number so I called him. He sounded apologetic and said he would arrange to get the money to me in a few days. The appointed time came and went and I had not heard from him. He started ducking my phone calls. Luckly, I know other people who know him, and his past ( he has done this thing in the past, so i learned) and might have to file a police report to recover my money. I just want my money back. I just I will just have to be more cynical and less trusting of people in the future.

I wouldn't do that just for "some guy I worked with", but that isn't a cause for the indoctrination of "dickhoodism"...

Do this tommorrow. Throw this bitch in jail. Its not about being a dick. Its not even about teaaching a lesson to a person who clearly needs one. Its about yo pride and yo damn money. Buck up , be a man, and do what's right.

I expect a report back on this shit.

What Yail said. That's fucked up -- that guy is a user and abuser of those who trust. I am so sorry that happened to you, Mike. Hope you recover your cash pronto!

I don't think this falls under the category 'Nice Guys', but rather 'Dumb Guys'. I don't know why anyone would cash somebody else's checks if they weren't family or close friends. Oh well, you live and learn.

a casual friend in college 'borrowed' my car for a night once, so she could move her stuff downtown, to an undisclosed location. a night turns into a morning into three days. i had to track her down using obscure contacts (her old-old soccer team) because she hadn't paid her cell bill in months and it was shut down. talked to somebody who happened to live near her new place, literally requested he walk down the street, ring her doorbell and hand over the phone to her. my car had loads of tickets on it and i had already filed my car as stolen.

ends up she had a history of this. another friend of mine had his car 'borrowed' from her. for a week.

she needed serious help. almost thought about having her arrested once i found out her address.

Some people choose to retain some empathy and to act as they hope someone would act toward them if they needed some help and had no family to get it from.

If it was less than $50 in checks (does't seem likely), then maybe yeah, lesson learned. If it's in the $500 ballpark, then it's ass whoopin time. You know he has no intention of paying you back, right?

Bullcrap what? Empathy is bullcrap? It is bullcrap to think that someone has no family that they can turn to?

I think it's better to help someone who needs it and never see the money again than it is to never help anyone and die satisfied that you were never a sucker.

Besides, turning your criticism on Mike first is asinine. Do you really think that he was more in the wrong for helping someone out and taking the risk than the other guy was for taking him for a ride?

I don't understand how the money came out of your account, if they were checks written out to him, unless you wrote him the checks...

sorry to hear that 4me.

but i will say this: it never hurts to have at least a little bit of cynicism and "assholism" as a pure survival skill.

good luck getting your money back - my guess is that he will hop right to it if the law is involved, just for pure intimidation's sake.

if all else fails, get a bat and confront this dipshit. aaron, advise us on how to keep this legal. :)

Not to get too off topic but this is somewhat what I say when someone complains about people who abuse social programs.

Aaron, would you have done what Mike did? I doubt that you would've. You have to use better judgement when it comes to financial issues. I would've been a lot more sympathetic, if Mike had done this for a close friend or relative, and in turn, the relative screwed him over. If a co-worker came up to me and asked me to cash his checks, I'd politely say, "No, I can't." and move on. It doesn't make me a bad person nor someone who doesn't believe in helping people out. I do it all the time. But again, people also suck sometimes and it's better to be safe than sorry. That's just my opinion.

Yup yup! Hope you didn't think I was hating. I know everybody typically credits their quotes.
