This past week I broke down and bought for cheap a used PCG-GR370 model Sony VAIO laptop that was originally purchased in 2002. It's running Windows XP Professional, has a Pentium III processor rated at 1.1 GHz, 512 MB RAM memory, has a CD/DVD-ROM drive and has 30 GB of hard drive disk space.

Can some fellow Obners recommend some programs, both free and to purchase for this PC laptop? For example, I'd like to have a good audio and DVD player and would like some suggestions. Is there a Winamp version that is better than others? This laptop came with a series of Sony Vaio software and system recovery cd's but they haven't been loaded onto the laptop at this time. Should I do this or just get better individual software programs to do what I want?

Information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what media player do you recommend for playing mp4 files on your PC? I think the latest version of Winamp v5.08 Full doesn't support them.

Anyone try buying Winamp Pro for $14.95 for mp3 encoding and full-speed cd burning???

...anyone?

Audio player - Foobar (supports AAC/MP4)
Ripping/Encoding - EAC/LAME
Data CD burning - burnatonce
Music CD burning - Burrrn
DVD player - I don't know of any worthwhile free decoders. PowerDVD with DVD Idle Pro is worth the money, IMHO.

Do you use Foobar as your default media player instead of say, Winamp?

I bought Winamp, and have been very happy with it. (the free version only encodes mp3s in 128bit, but the full version can do it all)

I have always liked the winamp layout and media library. It does everything I need, though I don't have an ipod or other portable player, so I'm not sure how it mesures up in that area.

Laugh if you like, but for the cost of one CD I think its worth having all the functionality in one nice app. I've done the piecemeal thing for years, with this app for burning, that app for ripping, etc... It gets old. Winamp rocks.

Plus, I like my mp3s to sound good, so I needed >128bit. Other people <coughTimmyjoe> don't care about quality mp3s.

Why do you not recommend burnatonce for Audio CDs?
