I kept reading short articles about him in Chicago over the last few weeks and seeing the Bolan comparisons. So last night I finally broke down and checked him out via iTunes. Now I'm confused.

Holy crap yes he does sound like Bolan both vocally and musically. So do I like him because of this? Or should I say "wanker" and write him off for copying so heavily?

I have to admit I really did like a couple of the songs I heard off his album. I'm just not sure I like the fact that he sounds almost EXACTLY like Bolan.

But he really is good damnit. Should I overlook the latter? Because it's not as if I don't like Bolan.

Anyone else care to chime in if they've heard him?

Yeah that's kind of what I was feeling. He really does seem great. I really want to get his album now.

I was just a teeny bit creeped out how much he sounded like Bolan. You normally hear comparisons like that and say ok yeah sure, but holy crap.

Radcliffe, hahaha. I knew I could count on you. That cracked me up. :D

new album totally hits that lazy summertime spot...i need to go back and check out this guys debut.

David Vandervelde - Waiting For The Sunrise

[img][525:525]http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9783/covyk1.jpg[/img]

Quote:
David Vandervelde dropped out of the sky in early 2007 with the well-received indie classic The Moonstation House Band. That album more than lived up to its title's potential, providing a healthy slab of cosmic, primal rock boogie. While this debut was the product of Vandervelde being isolated in the studio, being allowed to follow his every musical whim, Waiting For The Sunrise is a product of a new sort of isolation. After relocating from Chicago to Brooklyn, Vandervelde struggled to find his place in the new musical community. This seclusion led to most of the album being composed in his apartment on an acoustic guitar.

Although Waiting for the Sunrise is a decidedly more rootsy effort, Vandervelde has lost none of the exotic swagger that colored his debut. But this time around the savage is mixed with the sublime in a way that is reminiscent of the classic, sentimental pop of the 70’s. The production emboldens the AM radio vibe that prevails throughout the album, sliding effortlessly between hazy rock shuffles and ballads for wood paneled basements. On this sophomore effort Vandervelde has put his best foot forward with a focused set of songs that recall classic themes of journey and infinity. Rarely has a sun-drenched folk-rock album sounded this confident.

For the first time, members of his band contributed to the recording sessions and the finished album features a song co-written by ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett. The finished product is the result of Vandervelde having extended himself both musically and emotionally, looking both deeply inward and outward for inspiration.

david vandervelde is kinda frustrating because i love moonstation house band, but the rest of his music (especially at shows) are big steps from that album's airy glam-rock sound.

i saw him last night for the first time in a while and heard one new song (new album? no idea), lots from sunrise, and "nothin' no" to close. pretty typical for his live shows - a little southern rock, a little neil young, and that smooth high voice trying so hard to sound grungy.

He lives in Nashville now. Did the EP American Bread with Bobby Bare Jr last year. It's all covers of America and Bread songs
