...another artist everyone here has probably already heard, but whatever. Ironically, my favorite two albums from them only got two songs each, while my least favorite two got three apiece. And so it goes...

Zao

Zao is one of those bands that has made the odd trek from being unceasingly legendary to practically forgotten. Without a doubt, they single-handedly allowed Christian teens to realize that there is metal beyond Stryper (shudder) and spearheaded a thriving metalcore scene in the Christian market. At the same time they were also the darkest, most controversial band, and ultimately found the scene too constraining for them. Before Zao there were "spirit-filled hardcore" bands and there were Christian metal bands. And now Christian metalcore is the biggest segment of the Christian rock scene... yet Zao has faded into obscurity: none of the current metalcore teens know who they are. They were never a flashy, technical band... but they crafted mood better than any other Christian hard rock/metal/core band to hit the scene... and mood goes much farther than the spinning technicality that metal bands go for so frequently these days. And quite honestly, I have never heard a mainstream band that sounds quite like Zao, either.

Bands Who Are Hard To Google, Act 1:

Self

Image

Self is mostly Matt Mahaffey, a dude from Tenessee.
RIYL: Frantic, catchy pop music with hiphop influenced drums and occaisionally delicious heavy / crunchy guitars. The lyrics are never deep, but he manages to make disjointed guitars and impossible chords into an often Jellyfish-like finished product.

1. I Am A Little Explosion – Gizmodgery
2. Hellbent – Extras
3. Glued To The Girl – Self Feels Like Breaking Shit
4. Trunk Fulla Amps – Gizmodgery
5. Meg Ryan – Breakfast With Girls
6. Mermaid – Extras
7. Uno Song – Breakfast With Girls

Stereolab, Mouse on Mars, Mike Ladd, and possibly The Fall forthcoming.

Other possibilities: Smog, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Sightings, Black Dice, Wolf Eyes, John Fahey, Jim O'Rourke, Deerhoof, Autechre, Captain Beefheart

Assuming I ever find the time to do these.

this would be interesting although i may have the only two albums i'd like. I'd also be interested in a faust one although i should probably just buy an album of theirs.

i'm working on one for John Howard

AMG Wrote:
John Howard made an obscure British singer/songwriter album in the mid-'70s, Kid in a Big World, which like several efforts from that period showed the heavy influence of then newly emergent superstar Elton John. Howard was lower-key and more inclined toward eccentric story-songs, and not as gifted with a flair for chart hooks, though he too had a keyboard base to his arrangements and melodic ideas combining Beatles-Beach Boys pop with '70s singer/songwriting.

that makes it sound like he only had one album which was true for 30 years. A couple albums of unreleased material came out a couple of years ago and he started recording again after the reissues got great press.

i'm also planning on doing loudon wainwright, joe bataan, terry callier, charles wright, tony joe white, john strohm and a few brazilian ones assuming i don't lose my patience with these.

I want to do a Nits mix but only have a bunch of random downloaded tracks from their 30+ years. Likely will miss lots of great tracks I've never heard since I don't own full albums.

Probably worth doing though.

Edit: they're like XTC mixed with Sparks, though their style varied over the years. Never got a big fanbase in North America.

I could do Faust. I'd just be drawing from 4 albums (s/t, So Far, Tapes, & IV), but that could work.

Although, yeah, you should probably just buy IV or the Faust/So Far two-fer.

I've almost bought IV a couple of times but always put it back because i was buying too much already. I'll eventually get around to getting it so don't do this for me unless you think there's a lot of other interest. It was more a comment that i think you'd do a good one than a request.

The Band

Image

I know, I know. Ask 5 people for a tenner of these guys, get 6 answers. I’ve always liked the sound of them from the Last Waltz much better than the studio versions, so I pulled those songs from TLW. I wouldn’t have done this one, but it fits in with my theme, and I’ve also found a few people lately who didn’t know much about them, believe it or not. So on the off chance it does someone some good, here you go.

Across the Great Divide – The Band
Up On Cripple Creek – The Last Waltz
The Shape I’m In – The Last Waltz
Ain’t No More Cane On The Brazos – A Musical History
It Makes No Difference – The Last Waltz
Ophelia – The Last Waltz
The Weight – The Last Waltz
Stagefreight – The Last Waltz
I Shall Be Released – Music From Pig Pink
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – The Last Waltz

J.J. CALE

Image

Born an Okie and raised in Tulsa. He moved to L.A. in 1964 where he spent years gigging around and working as a studio engineer. Among his crew of friends were fellow Tulsans, Leon Russell and Delaney & Bonnie.

From L.A. it was onto Nashville, which is the time period from which this "tenner" culls its tracks. I chose his 70s era because these are the times when he defined his unique sound: extremely laid-back take on country blues and other roots music. During this time he built his legend and became a cult hero to musicians like Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.

As most of you probably know, J.J. wrote "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" and for better or worse, Clapton made them famous. Along the way, bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros. The Band, Widespread Panic, Johnny Cash, Santana, Bryan Ferry and Capt. Beefheart have put their spin on J.J.'s tunes. While taking in royalty checks, Cale has remained where he wants to be, out of the spotlight.

RIYL - back-porch stoner blues country-rock. Leon Russell, Dire Straits, Tony Joe White, Richard Buckner.

Tracklist

1. Guess I Lose
2. I’ll Make Love to You Anytime
3. Hey Baby
4. Lies
5. Thirteen Days
6. Cajun Moon
7. I’m a Gypsy Man
8. Durango
9. Ride Me High
10. I Got the Same Old Blues
