i love that description

I should probably listen to at least one of the ones i've downloaded before requesting something but I think someone should do one for the Allman Brothers.

stevie wonder - i'm bummed that you weren't able to put up your best stevie tenner, but i understand the vinyl thing. stevie is very hit and miss with me...i think there is a fine line between his good shit and his cheeseball shit. anyways, of course i've heard (and love) most of these songs before. of the 4 i hadn't heard, some come off crossing that cheeseball side ("master blaster" and "redemption song"), but i really like "i wish" and "hey love". thanks again for this nobody.

e, I recently grabbed all of Stevie's classic period (Music of My Mind thru Hotter Than July), so I could probably do another one.

Don't give me love, oh no none of that stuff
cos it's yer money I'm after, baby.
Your love and your kisses they're
just not enough, it's just yer
money I'm after, baby.

Well I know that it's hard
and I know that it's tuff
when each thing you're giving me
is just not enough.
Forget your heart, it's your bank
I wanna break, it's just
yer money I'm after, baby.

Heaven's above, no I'm not in love
it's just yer money I'm after baby.
I'm sticking with you and, oh,
that's just because
it's yer money I'm after, baby.

I'm in love with myself
and nobody else.

You know if someone could arrange for 27 hours in a day I could use 3 to get and hear all this stuff.

Someone get on that. Make sure it's in open source.

The Wonder stuff is fucking brilliant. It might be just nostalgia, but tonight, boozing in my room of sauna, it hits the right fucking spots. Circlesquare, that was my tune.

I might have to do a Thousand Yard Stare tenner after hearing this.

Just listened to The Billy Nayer Show tenner that neuroboy did.

Some weird stuff. Pretty funny in places and some really cool moments. I don't know if I'd want to dig any further into their catalog, but this was a fun little mix.

Thanks, Neuro!

That's actually the solo I credit to making me quit guitar lessons. The guy I was learning from was a real shredder. He got me pretty good pretty fast because he pushed me. But when he started trying to teach me that one, it hit me that not only was it way beyond my ability, but I just didn't have the desire to play like that.

I was going down the Rush path at like 15 or 16, and finally found the blues. I never had a fast enough pick hand to pull off the real fretboard gymnastics, and when I found Red House, I got msomething better to chase. Then fast forward to late college, and that got replaced by country, in which I'm still happily mired.

ok, giving this one a closer (ha) listen this morning so i wanted to comment a bit more. i am really digging this, but i don't see the stone roses comparison at all (which is why this band name had always stuck with me). no matter though, this is just really good 80's jangly-pop. very nice. thanks again rod.

on deck: gil scott-heron, stevie wonder and bootsy collins.

edit: had to come in here and mention what a kick-ass closer "mother of god" is on that close lobsters! damn.

glad you like it..based on your taste, i thought you probably would like it.

Saw Doctors - I'd never heard these guys before and assumed they were some kind of band favored by frats, like Blues Traveler or something. Wrong. Very much in the Pogues tradition, but way cleaner and more professional. Personally, I get tired of tin whistles and accordions pretty fast, but "Bless Me Father" here is a total blast. Thumbs mostly up.

JJ Cale - Only knew him from the hits, and even though he doesn't stray too far from the groove of his best-known songs there's enough going on that it seems soothing rather than repetitive. I'd like to hear more from him.

Desmond Dekker - again, someone I only knew from the usual couple songs. This is pretty awesome, & gonna get a ton of plays this summer.

The Specials - I had their first two albums on cassette and haven't listened to them in probably 20 years. Somewhat unsurprisingly "A Message to You, Rudy" is still my favorite, but the rest of their stuff is holding up really well too.

Betty Davis - I'm going senile. I totally forgot that I've got her This Is It complilation in my cd stacks. I'm not a huge funk fan, but there's no way I'm selling that disc - she's amazing.

The Subdudes - So close to being great, but they get a little too slick and polished for my liking. Still good - and I've already burned this tenner to cdr - but just kinda too tame. I bet they're incredible live.

Yeah Rads, that's a really good description of the Saw Doctors. They are definitely right smack in between the Waterboys and the Pogues. Much more of a party band than the Waterboys but much more professional and clean than the Pogues. Bless Me Father was an after thought on that mix but I absolutely get why you like it best. Most of the Saw Doctors material is 100X better live than on record. That's one of the few songs that really almost captures the energy of their live show.

The Subdudes are really good live. I didn't dl the mix but Tanner is a big fan and turned me on to them last year. I like the couple of discs I have but they are better live than on record.

I was planning to go see Wanda Jackson tonight, but waited until the last minute to get ready to go. In my haste to get up off the couch I knocked over a burgendy wine glass which sent glass shards everywhere. It took me a half hour to clean it up and precluded going to the show. Maybe it wasn't meant to be as I've hooked my laptop into my stereo and am finally listening to these tenners.

First up was Tentoze's Olney mix. Holy shit. This is the greatest thing i've heard in a long time. I've been curious for awhile based on comparisons to TVZ but didn't know where to start. I'm tempted to show up at Amoeba tomorrow and just buy his whole discography. This is reallly goog.

not sure what is up next other than opening another bottle of wine but this one is going to be hard to beat.

Still haven't gotten to listening to this yet, but makes me want to start Sunday morning with it.

Very good stuff- and yes, they are a real treat live. Saw them a few years ago at a small outdoor amphitheater in Las Vegas for $10. Just a damn fine blue collar band.

That mix leans more to his rockaday johnny side (he fronted a short-lived band called the X-Men in the early 80's) than the overall songbook, which is more acoustic/folkie. Let me know if you'd like some whole album stuff to try.

i've listened to a bunch of these.

As i said earlier, that olney is fantastic.

I also really liked the sparklehorse, al kooper and thelonius monster.

I liked the elliott murphy and zachary richards but maybe not enough to really want to dig much further into their catalogs.

I think I'm probably going to give up on the Go Betweens. I keep thinking I should like them but they tend to bore me.

listening to some of these here DL's now. initial impressions

1. Blue Mountain: i've heard some of this before and while it's ok, don't think it will be anything I will really explore too much.

2. Link Wray - for some reason this isn't what I thought Link Wray was like at all. I reall shouldn't listen to music writers. I will definitely need more Link Wray.

3. Dave Alvin - never heard much of this dude either. This is ok but not hearing anything all that special in these first couple of tracks. Haley's Comet is great though and this song reminds me a bit of Richard Thompson. This stuff is enjoyable enough but not sure I'd explore further.

4. Thelonious Monster - I enjoy Bob Forrest's last solo album but haven't heard this band before...except maybe one track on a monger mix. This shit is really good.

5. David Olney - well shit, I can definitely hear the Townes comparison in the description. I greatly prefer Townes but will give this some more listens.

6. Morphine - never listened to this band at all. Pretty good shit. I like the dude's voice but there are some real clunker tracks here. Not sure on this yet.

7. Gingersol - sounds like a million other cd's in my collection, which is good because I like this sort of shit. Nice.

8. John Cale - I'm not yet sure if I hate this or love this. "Bamboo Floor" is good...but then some of the other tracks...hmm.

9. Jerry Jerry - jail

9.

Blue Mountain - I vaguely remember these guys from the 90s and always got them mixed up with Scud Mountain Boys. It's good, though nothing I'm sorry I missed the first time. Burning it to a CDR.

Pernice Brothers - I keep trying to find more in the Pernice Brothers than mere like, but it just never happens for me. Well, almost never. The song "Somerville" has what all the other PB songs seem to lack - I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I think it's got something to do with the fact the guitar hook in "Somerville" is as strong as the vocal hook, and the way the two play off each other brings some kind of internal drama to the song. Whatever it is, I love it. It's not on this tenner though, and as usual I find myself hearing the same PB song over and over after song #3.

Taj Mahal - Fuck me. Now I've gotta start looking for Taj Mahal albums.

Flipper - One of those bands it's sorta more fun to talk about than listen to. And I remember a lot of talking about these guys from back "in the day" - but for some reason never picked up an album. That reason has been clarified for me now. I'm glad they existed; I really like them; I just don't wanna listen to them.
