This Gil Scott-Heron is mighty fine, too.

Blue Mountain - I vaguely remember these guys from the 90s and always got them mixed up with Scud Mountain Boys. It's good, though nothing I'm sorry I missed the first time. Burning it to a CDR.

Pernice Brothers - I keep trying to find more in the Pernice Brothers than mere like, but it just never happens for me. Well, almost never. The song "Somerville" has what all the other PB songs seem to lack - I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I think it's got something to do with the fact the guitar hook in "Somerville" is as strong as the vocal hook, and the way the two play off each other brings some kind of internal drama to the song. Whatever it is, I love it. It's not on this tenner though, and as usual I find myself hearing the same PB song over and over after song #3.

Taj Mahal - Fuck me. Now I've gotta start looking for Taj Mahal albums.

Flipper - One of those bands it's sorta more fun to talk about than listen to. And I remember a lot of talking about these guys from back "in the day" - but for some reason never picked up an album. That reason has been clarified for me now. I'm glad they existed; I really like them; I just don't wanna listen to them.

100% right on Pernice Brothers

No offense to Pete - I enjoyed his mix, and it gave me a bunch of tracks I didn't have - but I think Generic is an easier way to listen to Flipper and might be a better introduction/refresher. It's plenty of fun to listen to.

First up was Tentoze's Olney mix. Holy shit. This is the greatest thing i've heard in a long time. I've been curious for awhile based on comparisons to TVZ but didn't know where to start. I'm tempted to show up at Amoeba tomorrow and just buy his whole discography. This is reallly goog.

That mix leans more to his rockaday johnny side (he fronted a short-lived band called the X-Men in the early 80's) than the overall songbook, which is more acoustic/folkie. Let me know if you'd like some whole album stuff to try.

Thanks for the offer but i liked him enough to just jump in. I ordered High, Lonesome and Wide today. If there's a better place to start let me know and I'll order that too.

Good old Flipper, guaranteed to clear most of the room in 30 seconds flat. I'll stay by the speaker.

Yeah for an introduction Generic is the "classic" punk album, underrated as well, but despite it being the clear standout of the studio albums i'd stick the compilation Sex Bomb Baby at least on a par with it. Blow N' Chunks/Public Flipper are also essential to hear the live Flipper experience.

I have a feeling that radcliffe would like American Grafishy. From my limited view of his tastes in punk, that would be more his style.

Here's my spin:

# Eye of the Storm (1986)
# Deeper Well (1989)
# Roses (1991)

All 3 of the above are excellent.

# Top to Bottom (1991)
# Border Crossing (1992)
# Ache of Longing (1994)
# Live in Holland (1994)

For some reason, I've never heard any of the above.

# High, Wide and Lonesome (1995)
# Real Lies (1997)

Both very good.

# Through a Glass Darkly (1999)

Excellent.

# Omar's Blues (2000)

Good, but a lesser effort, IMO.

# The Wheel (2003)
# Migration (2005)

Went a little off-target for me on those 2, especially on Migration- the vocals sounded off-key on most of the songs, for some reason.

# One Tough Town (2008)

Return to form- excellent- harder edges, with some Dixieland back-notes thrown in.

8. John Cale - I'm not yet sure if I hate this or love this. "Bamboo Floor" is good...but then some of the other tracks...hmm.

He is all over the place, and I tried desperately not to make all the tracks from just Paris, 1919 (which I probably could have). Glad that you listened. He is one of my all-time favorites.

This is really, really good. His version of Baby Blue especially is killing me, but there are so many directions represented here, all of them done pretty damn well. I guess I was expecting more "mongerous spectacle" than substance, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.

I even nervously wiki'd him a few days ago, and so far I haven't been handcuffed. (How much of this, if any, was recorded with him only having 1 lung? All of it? If so, crazy - dude had pipes.)

You Am I are so great. Although I've heard some of the songs before, I'll more than happy to play this set a few more times. I'm generally a sucker for whoo-hooos and hand-claps, which is all over the tenner.

However Dream Syndicate did not agree with me. I'll try again with that another time.

The Tony Joe White is no slouch either. That was an excellent mix.

You and Radcliffe are really bringing out the horrible stuff here, and I for one and very thankful.

Tsar is so ridiculously good it's insane. If these guys sold their souls for the hooks on that debut album, it was the right thing to do.

And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I found Neutral Milk Hotel to be completely unlistenable. The extreme love and praise this gets, especially around here, is baffling to me.

If you'd taken a few moments to consult with the HIVE we could have saved you some time. Move on to the Bill Fay. I want someone to listen to that one.

Tentoze,

Thanks for the Olney recommendations. I got a ticket in the mail yesterday for running a red light with a camera installed on it. It came with a pretty steep $400 fine so I think i'm going to slow down on the cd purchases for a while but i'm definitely going to look to buy some of these in the future.
