Alright. So the 33 1/3 blog says they'll take proposals in October. I have no gift for fiction but am a music geek, so this is my best and perhaps only shot at getting a book published.

So gimme some ideas. I've got a few (below) but can always use some ideas. My natural choice ("Nation of Millions") has already been taken by our own far-more-qualified Whiney.

Mine:
"Exile in Guyville" - so I can finally get elbows deep into the specious connection to "Mainstreet" that I've always contended was a coy marketing gimmick by Phair. Seriously, I did a track to track comparison Sat night and it just isn't there.

"London Calling" - it's been written about to death, but the fact this hasn't been in the series yet is kinda staggering.

KLF's "The White Room" - if you haven't read the allmusic entry on these guys, do it NOW. One of the most surprisingly fascinating pop groups of all time.

"Mellow Gold" - I go to it more than "Odelay," plus 33 1/3 likes to eschew obvious choices like that sometimes.

Cypress Hill's debut - Dre gets all the credit, but DJ Muggs did 90% of the work in creating the West Coast g-funk sound.

Oh shit of those I'm far and away supporting Cypress Hill's debut.

Don't know that I agree with this, but I would love to see you get this one going.

Shit hot album, and HARD AS HELL. The Spanglish, the samples and the sheer celebration of murder, getting stoned, and all other types of ill shit was definitely a glimpse at the cholo/Spanish gangster life instead of the brothers' hogging all the ganged out glory.

I agree with KLF. Its an interesting record, and its in a genre the book series hasn't delved into very far--electro (particularly acid house).

Obviously with the advent of the internet, trying to track down Caunty and Drummond will be easier, but I would expect a trip to Liverpool at the very least. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about though.

Also you need to track down a copy of that damned movie. Been searching for a good quality version (read:non-horrid bootleg) for quite some time.

Both of those are gold - especially with the sheer amount of censorship talk, etc that surrounded it. Would be an interesting study.

I just wish that Body Count record was better than it is. Live they were ungodly and the ingredients were there for a really special album, but it just didn't come together.

an admitted overstatement, but he took the crucial steps in advancing things post-NWA to a place where that sound could be palatable on a large scale. It's all there. Just listen.

Yeah, and Body Count the song was originally on OG: Original Gangsta.

Mommy's Gotta Die Tonight and Evil Dick, etc are pretty awful, but Cop Killer, There Goes the Neighborhood and Body Count are all pretty good. Granted, it would get about 1 1/2 stars as an album - I just haven't even thought of this in years.

What about Amerikkka's Most Wanted?

Main thing is it's not enough in my wheelhouse to do it justice. The albums we've been talking about all have big stories or curiosities associated with them, enough for me to hang a book on.
While it's a great, landmark record, a book on "Amerikkka" would call for a heavy dose of insight and critical analysis of the music itself and I'm not invested in it heavily enough to do that well.
Gotta play to your strengths. I'm a reporter/writer more than a critic.

According to wiki, london calling is in the announced but with unknown status pile.

I can't believe that neither massive attack or portishead aren't on the list there anywhere.

i think you'd get the most mileage out of Exile. You can do the Mainstreet comparison, but also discuss the much bigger "Women In Rock" hype machine that the labels/media created using Liz as their poster girl.

Man I love that rekkid. At least 4 stars for me. I've got it on tape actually. "KKK Bitch" is fucking awesome and I'm pretty sure around '92, "Body Count's In the House" was THE song to be played through some Rockford Fosgate 12's as you cruise by the park where all the kids were.

"This weekend, seventeen youths killed in gang homicides, now sports..."

I would say definitely not London Calling, and I think Exile would be kind of boring, especially if it plays to what bort's talking about.

Any of those others would be good. Mellow Gold would be interesting, but I wonder if Beck would even talk to you. (He's supposed to be a real dick, right?)

You should do Carole King's Tapestry... born 1942, same year as McCartney and yet writing chart toppers at 18-19 years old. Shit, the beatles covered some goffin/king.

All those years as a hit maker, and yet she wasn't pretty enough, didn't have a good enough voice, and was generally kind of put down in the male dominated recording industry despite her track record. Puts out that album with The City, then some critical acclaim with Writer, and then bam... best selling solo album until Thriller knocked it off the charts. I think for 1971, that album was unexpected, and did well because of it's honesty.

Some really good ideas floating around here. I had another one last night.

Operation Ivy - "Energy"
For better or worse, the album that fused punk and ska together and ushered in waves of copycats. But it's an awesome punk record, one that I go to constantly. Also one of the best time capsules of the late '80s-'90s Gilman Street scene in Berkeley that saw an ungodly number of big-name punk bands swirl about. And you get into the pre-history and early days of Rancid, who probably deserve a book of their own for "...And Out Come The Wolves."

I nominate Radcliffe to write it.
