In honor of the 5th anniversary of the original CMJ Listmania, Obner (in conjunction with mutty and Drinky) would like to proudly present Listmania!: The Anniversary.

The gist: compile a list of your 100 favorite albums, rank them, and submit them. All lists received will be added together and data will be compiled to produce the Obner 100 Favorites Album list.

Rank them. Any unranked lists submitted will be ignored. Alphabetical order does not count.

100. 100 is ideal. If you really can't come up with that many, I will accept shorter lists. In those cases, do not leave 50-60 blank while sticking albums in at 49 and 61. They should still be a straight top 20 or 75 or whatever.

Be honest. In the past, people have said "I only included one album per artist." That's dandy but it means your final list isn't really your 100 favorite albums then, is it? If your favorite band winds up placing six albums on your top 100, so be it. They're your favorite band for a reason.

Do not submit unless you are completely decided. To avoid having to tackle every list the day after the deadline closes, I'll be tallying and processing data as lists are received. As a result, once your list is in, it's in. Going back and changing a couple of rankings or swapping new albums in would be a huge pain in the ass.

All lists must be submitted via PM to myself by August 31, 11:59 pm EST.

And remember, have fun!

Will this be the thread for posting lists? Or do we make our own threads?

Oh, I don't want to the one to make the call on that. People are going to get uppity either way.

maybe, MAYBE 10 of my 100 would make the 'end all' list here, so I will politely decline, and just offer my less than witty commentary along the way.....

My list is filled with eels and Weakerthans and Hawksley Workman. They'll most likely be the sole mentions but I'm submitting anyway.

If you think your list would be vastly different than the average obner, all the more reason to make sure to weigh in.

And, due to scoring, your #1 will still carry more weight than an album that appears on the lower third of four different lists.

This is the wrong attitude. Individual lists are more interesting anyway. Just make your list and post it.

And I'm for all the lists being posted in this thread rather than everyone making their own thread like they did back on CMJ.

Ditto. I wasn't here back then, but that *would* be a huge pain.

I think everyone's list merits its own thread--its not like we have 300 regular posters.

Well, I guess the first person to post a list will set the trend. (It won't be me. Mine won't be done for a while.)

I think one list - one thread is the way to go. I'd also like to see people post their list from 5 years ago, if they still have them. That way, we can all laugh at their declining tastes

Yeah, I'd agree with this. Plus as we saw with the nearly 40 page tenners thread, things can go awry very quickly when you couple the related posts and those ancillary to the topic at hand. I'm probably going to do this in another week or so during my time-off.

I'm for separate threads, but I do think posting the first list as well would be a great idea. Mine is... interesting.

I have every intention of doing this but I know that I will probably never actually get around to it.

To make it look like a cohesive effort, we should perhaps follow the same protocol when starting individual threads. Something like this:

LISTMANIA: Yail Bloor's 100 Albums

I like the individual threads idea, and the posting of the first list idea.

I guess Source Codes and Tags didn't hold up as well as I had hoped...

i rather not post my first list, i think i just threw a bunch of albums together for the sake of making a list. not much thought in it at all. and why should someone be committed to something that was 5 yrs ago? (holy hell 5 yrs already?!)

They should all be titled this.

That's what I'm calling mine. And coming in at #1: Weezer's Red Album.

This is a great idea. I had all the original lists from 5 years ago but lost them recently. I seem to remember London Calling. OK Computer and Revolver topping the lists overall. It will also be good to compare these lists against other music forum sites that have done top 100 album lists.

how did we define album? do compilations count, especially if it is compilation of early singles that were never an album? or peel sessions? what about those?

I think it's basically individual judgment. If you want to include EP's, I suppose you could even do that. I know I've got a couple of compilations on my list. I don't see why those or soundtracks shouldn't warrant inclusion.
