Count me in.

A long time ago people used to tell me how great they were. Not knowing where to start and not asking anyone, I grabbed and album (Sumday, I think it's called) and have to say I was really really bored by it. I am open to hearing more.

awful band. i got fooled into buying that S. Slump album and heard a bit of Sumday.

I didn't mind Sumday at all. The same sort of inconsequential, melancholy indie pop as the Shins, Earlimart, and the Long Winters - nothing to start a dick slapping fight over.

inconsequential, yes. agree with that. im slapping my dick, but not in anyone's direction.

The fact that ROG and billyg don't like Grandaddy makes me want to compile a tenner even more. I don't have any B-Sides from '96 - '00, however, so mine would be culled from their main albums.

Sonic Youth: Duex

Sonic Youth has been so much to music since the early 80s, starting off as brash noise rockers, then evolving into grungy forefathers, then refined noise rockers, then mellow tunes crafters... while never sounding like compromisers or like they're retreading anything. They know how to stay true to themselves and damn the rest. The result is a catalog of over 300 songs, which are impossibly tough to pare down to a mere tenner. I saw them live once in my life, and it is one of the highlights of my life. Even though they were supporting Rather Ripped, their weakest album since the late 80s, they brought the rock and melded the songs into a fantastic live setting.

This tenner is meant as a supplement to konstantl's mix... When it become time to make some painful cuts, I made some selections based on how well represented his mix was. But really, this should have been a twentier or a thirtier to really do the band justice.

[img][349:500]http://sophiejarryonstageandback.neufblog.com/live/images/sonic_youth_rock_en_seine_sjarry6.jpg[/img]

01. Trilogy: b) Hyperstation (Daydream Nation)
02. Hoarfrost (A Thousand Leaves)
03. Sugar Kane (Dirty)
04. NYC Ghosts & Flowers (NYC Ghosts & Flowers)
05. Androgynous Mind (Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star)
06. Secret Girls (EVOL)
07. Disappear (Goo)
08. Steamxsonik Subway (NYC Ghosts & Flowers)
09. Wish Fulfillment (Dirty)
10. Little Trouble Girl (Washing Machine)

...I had forgotten how awesome A Thousand Leaves and Dirty were. And how weak Goo is. And if I could have included every track from NYC Ghosts & Flowers I would have. If I had some throw-away space I'd have enjoyed including some of the noise stuff... but space too precious for that. Which is why I went with Hyperstation instead of Teen Age Riot from Daydream Nation. Also would have enjoyed including some stuff from Murray Street through Rather Ripped... but between konstantl covering that era well and space issues, they got neglected.

This probably won't be anyone's favorite tenner, but this band proved that France wasn't just standing by watching as the rest of the world exploded with punk and noo wave in the late 70s/early 80s. They progressed quite quickly, moving from the brittle punk of their debut and ending up at a place that was a commercially doomed mix of punk, pop, glam, and a 50s sock hop. Singer Dominique Laboubée died in 2002.

Man… or Astro-man?

Maybe a novelty band, maybe a one-trick pony, but that one thing they did, they did really, really well. Incredibly fun band, live and on record. This mix showcases their most "typical" sound, the only major detour being a "song" played entirely on a dot matrix printer. I wanted to include one of their tracks with vocals (like the MST3K theme), but ultimately I didn't feel like any of them were as good as these. Download this mix. It's only 24 minutes long.

RIYL: surf guitar, b-movie samples, awesomeness

1. "Evil Plans Of Planet Spectra" (Experiment Zero - 1996)
2. "A Mouthful of Exhaust" (Destroy All Astro-Men - 1994)
3. "Song Of The Two Mile Linear Particle Accelerator Stanford University, Stanford, California" (A Spectrum Of Infinite Scale - 2000)
4. "Man Made Of CO2" (1000x EP - 1997)
5. "Super Rocket Rumble" (Deluxe Men In Space EP - 1996)
6. "Interstellar Hardrive" (EEVIAC: Operational Index And Reference Guide - 1997)
7. "A Simple Text File" (A Spectrum Of Infinite Scale - 2000)
8. "Taco Wagon" (Destroy All Astro-Men - 1994)
9. "DNI" (Experiment Zero - 1996)
10. "Reversal Of Polarity" (EEVIAC: Operational Index And Reference Guide - 1997)

My favorite Bowie tracks change from year to year. For years I liked the Ziggy stuff best, then the melodrama stuff, then the ambient. Now it's more the cacophonous and menacing.

Spot the Davey above.

No matter if they are good, terrible, or toilet choffers, they get points for "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Captain" - great song.

NRBQ

Image

AMG Wrote:
NRBQ (the New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) have amassed a fanatical cult following over more than two decades of recording and touring with their incredibly versatile eclecticism; their music might veer from country to rockabilly to pop to bar-band R&B to blues to free jazz, all in the same album. The group's wacky, sometimes corny sense of humor and in-concert unpredictability (the band sometimes vows to play whatever song audience members request) have endeared them to fans, even if some find them a bit precious. The band was formed in Miami in 1967 by keyboardist Terry Adams, guitarist Steve Ferguson (both former members of the Louisville, Kentucky band Mersey Beats USA), singer Frank Gadler, drummer Tom Staley, and bassist/singer Joey Spampinato. After moving to New Jersey and playing clubs, NRBQ attracted immediate attention with their wide-ranging musicianship and were signed to Columbia. On their 1969 self-titled debut, the band covered rockabilly and Sun Ra on one record and pulled it off; not surprisingly, rave reviews followed. NRBQ followed it with Boppin' the Blues, a collaboration with rockabilly singer Carl Perkins; it too received critical praise, but Columbia was unhappy with the group's sales and dropped it. Ferguson left the group and was replaced by former Wildweeds guitarist Al Anderson; Gadler left in 1972, and in 1974, drummer Tom Ardolino replaced Staley. This lineup carried on through 1994, recording albums for labels including Kama Sutra, Rounder, and Mercury (At Yankee Stadium), as well as their own Red Rooster. NRBQ and its members have worked with Skeeter Davis (1985's She Sings, They Play), John Sebastian, jazz artist Carla Bley, and even unofficial manager and wrestling star Captain Lou Albano, who appeared on 1986's Lou and the Q. Joey Spampinato appeared in the Chuck Berry film Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll as a member of the backing band. In 1989, the band got another one-album major-label deal with Virgin, which resulted in Wild Weekend, their first album to make the charts since the debut record. Al Anderson joined a Nashville publishing house in 1991 and had songs recorded by several major country artists, including Alabama, Carlene Carter, and Ricky Van Shelton. After recording Message for the Mess Age, the group's 1994 album for Forward Records, Anderson left NRBQ for a solo career. He was replaced months later by Spampinato's brother Johnny. After a handful of live efforts including 1997's Tokyo: Recorded Live at on Air West Tokyo and 1998's You Gotta Be Loose: Recorded Live in U.S.A., the group resurfaced in 1999 with a self-titled studio release.

I think a couple of people asked about these guys recently so i thought i'd try to throw something together. I don't have the carl perkins collab unfortunately.

Another tough one. So many more good songs but I decided to go with the jaunty & jangly instead of the ambient & broody.

Aside from "Long Cool Woman..." I tried to avoid the big hits (at least the ones that were big in the US). Everything came from the "30th Anniversary Collection" 3-disc set. Something well-worth owning.

1. Now's the Time
2. Here I Go Again
3. We're Through
4. Look Through Any Window
5. Stop Stop Stop
6. Kill Me Quick
7. Like Everytime Before
8. Listen To Me
9. Sorry Suzanne
10. Long Cool Woman In a Black Dress

RIYL: Um, The Hollies...
