A friend of mine recommended them to me so I downloaded the album.

I don't get it. This is a double disc of instrumental drones. It might as well be two whales communicating with one another. Who listens to this shit?

I should give it another listen then. Should I be doing any particular activity while listening to it? Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong.

And Their Refinement Of The Decline - Stars Of The Lid

Just beat out the Field (c.f. other thread of disappreciation) on Metacritic as highest rated of the year.

That may be a bit high, but I find it beautiful... good on a long trip in a car, good at 3 am, good on a Sunday, good for a headache, good for screwing, good for background for reading, good for cleaning the house, good for going up or coming down... just good.

Just bumping here as I finally picked up their Avec Laudenum record (beautiful as well). In listening to it I was thinking, have these guys ever put out a less than great album? I came to the conclusion they have not. But then got to thinking, has Kranky ever had an album with their name on it that wasn't good? I won't say great because that's holding a label to a pretty ridiculous standard, but I don't think (I might be forgetting some, not sure) I own a single Kranky release that I don't love. Mind you I've had a bit to drink, but right now this strikes me as a hell of an accomplishment for a little old label that's been around for a minute now. Not sure there are any others that are that consistent.

I have definitely dug almost all of the Kranky stuff I've heard.

And Their Refinement Of The Decline is the only album of theirs I've heard. I can understand how it's not for everyone, but it has served me well on many a 4AM drive home or those mornings where I need to ease the blur from my head. Good for while reading too.

I have to disagree with this. While I do think it's unfortunate that a lot of people who checked out and really liked the last one may not have gone any farther than Stars of the Lid in looking for similar music, there's no way I can fault them for that. The guys have consistently put out some of the outright prettiest music out there for awhile now.

In addition to being just pretty, I think they are just as good, if not almost always better, as similar artists in understanding every aspect of what they do. What I mean is, you have some ambient/drone artists that dwell in the electronic realm and understand wave interplay and decay as it is applied in an almost mathematic sense. You have others who understand the very organic side and can modulate notes to the next perfect piece as far as progression goes. But with the Stars of the Lid you get all this, plus a serious understanding of both modern and conventional instrumentation (in my opinion Keith Fullerton Whitman is the only other person in this class). They understand the way one sine wave is going to react when another is placed on it, and can start the decay at the absolute peak of the note and extend it, as waveform goes. At the same time, and perhaps this part helps by seeing them live, they also understand for example, the different way a note will exist when played on a platinum flute as opposed to one of lesser density and they orchestrate this difference well. When you have two platinum's play a note that will produce zero decay naturally and two different flutes play the same note, at the time the note ends there's this very natural difference, it's subtle but still noticeable, and they capture those nuances very well.

I don't know, I'm ranting like a starstruck fanboy here (and honestly am quite unapologetic about it), but the guy's are great at what they do, and really no argument against that is valid in my opinion.

stars of the lid are sort of just torch bearers for this kind of music though. i mean sound installation pieces and other avant-garde/minimal/ambient shit has been going down for like 50 years.

Very true, and there are a ton of other great artists out there right now doing similar things. I certainly didn't mean to come across as saying they are doing something brand new or something that no one else is doing, because that's certainly not the case. I just happen to think (hell, maybe even believe as I think that's a bit stronger word) that they are one of, if not the best at what they do.
