The Pop

Image

Little known L.A. band that existed from 1976 - 1981, and David Robinson's first stop after quitting the Modern Lovers (on his way to the Cars). The band name got them lumped into the power pop frenzy of 1979, but their sound is much closer to the Cars (circa Candy-O) and their two vocalists remind me of the Strummer/Jones tag team. The band faded away shortly after Tim McGovern left to join the Motels (ugh).

1. Down on the Boulevard
2. Animal Eyes
3. Under the Microscope

10. Look At Me Now

RIYL: a less polished Cars, without the synth.

Probably because I'm impulsive and slightly obsessive.

But, yeah.

Another band I heard back in the 90's with a bit of innocence in that heartland poppy way but a good knack for song writing. Sometime collaborator with the Vulgar Boatmen(Dale Lawrence), Jake Smith takes the lead here with some decent guitar work. The wife(for you "I'd fuh" folks) Freda Love on drums switches it up to a more styled approach. Previous band connections are Blake Babies, Antenna, and the Vulgar Boatmen. It's fairly happy laid back pop music, very organic sounding and occasional cello here and there. It was hard to pick a tenner to best represent, but I think at the very least that the Naive Melody cover could be worth it alone for those not sure enough to click it.

03 A Year Ago Today
04 Naive Melody (Talking Heads Cover)

08 Tell Me
09 Feel My Way

This is a good tenner, but I'm always upset by the lack of love that Apollo 18 gets.

7. (I'm) Misunderstood
8. Story of Love
9. Demolition Girl
10. Nights In Venice

This mix sticks with the first 3 Saints albums - the Ed Keupper era - because the band changed its sound so completely in its later incarnations. Maybe I'll put together a mix of the latterday stuff some other time.

I only knew "Kira's Coming Over" from that. That's a grower tenner I think. Sounds workmanlike on first listen but I bet I'll like it a lot more on the fifth or sixth run-through.

Also there's not much about them online, even though they seem to have had other albums in 2001 and 2006.

I can understand the "workmanlike" comment because some of these are ep songs and fleshed out later, eg. "let It slip." AMG considered Anonymous Tip as a proper release, but I always figured it more of an ep, so that would make 5 of these 10 ep releases imo.

"Kira" sucked me in when I first heard it. At some point the band just faded away. Even though there was no fanfare on release I managed to find Distant Relative as a down load a while back but my computer crashed and the hardcopy got the disease. The 2006 album I've not seen. And, apparently they've upped and moved to Nottingham.

Did anyone do one of these for The Clean?
I've been wanting to hear them for some time now and have never been able to pull the trigger when I've had the chance.

I'd love to check it out if any of you would be (or has been) so kind.

Was able find all of Danielle Dax's releases this morning so I can get a tenner together without having to figure out how to use worn-out cassettes and scratchy records.

Hah, I thought they had been so off the radar since 2001, I never even bothered to check it.

Often compared to Echo & The Bunnymen, I always loved this criminally overlooked post-punk band.

Excellent.

I'm also interested in Translator and Wire Train tenners since it's been ages since I had their stuff. Maybe I can scout around and find some things.
