I was just listening to the new releases at the Indie site that I like to check out and this is what came on:

Leo Lago - "Anunziô Zumbi"

Let me know what you think. You like it? Or is it just another psycho piece of PopTogg crap?

So amazing it needed an extra Z

Sounds like what some would refer to as PPDD

I think I kind of dig it. It's interesting and makes me want to listen to it/him some more, so I guess that's a plus. Will give a good headphone listen later as I would like to pay better attention to the lyrics.

Of offense. I know that our tastes frequently diverge down in Brazil.

Think I like this one as well, same dude:

http://independentartistscompany.com/so ... tID=123255

His accent is hard, will have to strap on the headphones and get real geek with it when I have time later. Immediately I'm struck by some of the traditional sounds on here which I would expect from some of the country areas, yet listening to his accent and some of the words I can pick up on easily, I'm guessing he's from down South, either Rio or one of the Parana States maybe, which would also explain a lot of the other continent influence here, but anyways it creates a serious contrast between the music and his vocals. This is seriously damn good man.

it's a bit repetitive, but somehow dancy. though I don't care too much for this samba induced stuff, I prefer the old portuguese fado. brazilian music sounds always happy, that kills me.

i didn't listen to your song or that much of todd's but it sounded more like the pernambuco type sound than something from rio.

Yeah, I like that one, too. I was struck by the percussion on that first one, though. And yes, on his page it does say that is is from Rio.
And, I'm glad that you're enjoying it.

I'm a big Tom Zé fan, too -- who most of the board hates. The spirit of this reminds me a lot of him, despite the music sounds nothing like him. You a Tom Zé fan as well?

It was ok, but sounds a lot like stuff that the arty North American kids are trying to do with tribal/Brazilian rhythms.

Definitely, and that's what strikes me, is the sound doesn't fit his accent/dialect variations. I would have immediately thought Recife or maybe Olinda (arguably the prettiest city I've ever seen) (for reference points anyhow) from the music, but the vocals don't fit. Maybe he's a transplant?

I won't give either of you any arguments when it comes to region or style or anything like that. Hell, before I saw that he was from Brazil, I thought that it was African. Shows you what I know.

I just know what i like.
And I am finding your discussion of the various styles interesting. So, thanks.

oh ok...interesting. i was basing it on the music, not vocals. I don't recognize regional accents.

Absolutely. Todos os Olhos and Grande Liquidacao probably should have made my Listmania. Think composition-wise he creates/created some of the finest bits of working/functioning dissonance of the past 30 years. I figured he would get a lot of love on this board. Odd.

Amazing, right? In addition, far and away the best place for Carnival celebrations. One, unlike Rio or Sao Paulo Proper, most festivities are free. In addition, there is a huge African immigrant population, so there is this great mix of the traditional South American festivities and music and dance with the music and dance of the Africans in the area. It is amazing.

That's also why Billy G and I thought of Pernambuco, and Todd noted the African sound. It resonates in a lot of the music that comes out of that region and in my opinion is some of the best fusion imaginable. Particularly, the type of stuff that is done outside of the cities. Within the cities you can expect the music to be influenced more by pop-Brazil or even Western stuff, but a lot of the campesino stuff is so tribal and organic but the fusion creates this wonderful, natural psychadelia, amazing stuff down there.

I will try and get a mix up here in the next couple of days of a lot of the stuff I heard down there.

Have heard great things about Salvador, but never made it there. Pretty much just passed through Bahia. All the great things I say about Olinda supposedly ring true there also, as I've heard Salvador is the legitimate Afro-Brazil epicentre. Would love to make it there someday.

Dude has a new album out.
And he's offering it FOR FREE, as a download.
Follow the (kinda confusing) links from his site.

I have yet to give it a listen, but I do appreciate the giveaway. Hopefully it'll work out for him. Go, Léo, Go!!!

EDIT:
Listening to the new record now, and it reminds me a lot of Frank Zappa -- even the vocals. Except, you know, in Portugese.

So weird.
More like a Brazilian Zappa on acid.
