“I don’t think Fedor is human,” Sylvia half-joked after the fight. “He is by far the best fighter in the world.”

The Heavyweight division in MMA is nearly as overrated as the Heavyweight division in boxing.

I want to see Ultimate Fight Night in Omaha on September 15, but there is no way I will drop $200 on a floor seat. I'd pay the $35 for nose bleed if the Civic had a good screen system, but it is nearly as old as the arena I work at.

Both headline fights last night ended up being pretty weak. UFC is going to end up killing itself by having to have a superfight between Anderson Silva and either Penn or St. Pierre.

The Silva/Irvin fight was fairly predictable and really didn't do much for either fighter, but I thought the Fedor/Tim fight was great and answered a lot of questions.

As for the superfights, I really don't want to see Penn move up to welterweight again (or god forbid, a chunky Penn at middleweight). He's ambitious, but we all know what happens to him when he starts adding the pounds, and I simply think GSP and Silva would beat him anyway.

how is it overrated? the heavyweight division is the least popular division in mma. theres 3 great fighters that anyone cares about, the rest are average.

Fedor was consistantly ranked as the top MMA fighter this past year without having a marquee fight, and the MMA World has done everything possible to make stars out of sub-par fighters such as Tim Sylvia, Brock Lesnar, Kimbo Slice and now make two of the so called best UFC heavyweights coaches for the next Ultimate Fighter show.

If it is the least popular division, why would Affliction devote nearly an entire pay per view to that class.

i think because fedor is the most exciting guy to watch. there is no one that can compete with him, so there's naturally interest in the top guy in any division (if not all divisions).

As always, just going to piggyback here as tomorrow night's card is the most exciting I've seen in awhile. I honestly think it's going to end up like Pride 33 with most of the fights being outright wars. To run through the card here:

Fitch over GSP: GSP has cosistently struggled against strong BJJ. Mayhem Miller took him the distance, Serra beat him, Fitch is great on the ground and has better hands than either of them. He's been marketed poorly but the guy is for real. I love GSP, but I taking Fitch on this one.

Huerta over Florian: Kenny will make him bleed, and Huerta can't afford to get caught like he did against Guida. Kenny hasn't been pushed real deep in awhile, think if it goes past the middle of the second round Huerta's cardio will really give him an advantage. This is going to be a great fight even though neither is ready for BJ (at 155 the only person out there for BJ right now is Faber and we're not going to see that for a long while).

Herring over Lesnar: Herring has always struggled with consistency. He should have finished Big Nog and ended up paying for letting him get up. Coming out of the old Pride HW class he's seen guys Lesnar's size before with a lot more experience. I don't think Lesnar understands the angles that Herring is going to be coming at him from. Lesnar's got some heavy ass hands, and we know he can wrestle, but I don't think the footwork or defense is there.

Maia over Macdonald: I think Maia is probably the most underrated fighter out there right now and is going to put on a show against Macdonald. The guy is as well rounded as it gets, and I think all the Wanderlei apprentices are coming out with something to prove for awhile. Don't see this getting past the 1st round. A win here and maybe one more and we should get to see Maia vs. Silva, can't wait.

Gamburyan over Emerson: In the "I could care less" fight of the night. Neither of these guys are ready to go at the upper level of 155 right now. That being said, Gamburyan's only losses are to Nate Diaz and Sherk, so maybe he is for real and I've just overlooked him, so given that I'm going with him. Plus, Emerson didn't impress me at all against Nakamura.

McCrory over Cummo: I like the hell out of Luke but this is a tough match for him. Tandam has quick hands and great BJJ. That being said both coming off of a loss, and McCrory ground defense looked pretty weak, Cummo does have a shot. If McCrory is smart he'll keep it standing, if it does go to the ground though this is going to be a technically exciting fight for sure.

Kongo over Evensen: This one will be interesting too, as Kongo is another who's inconsistency kills me and Evensen can throw man. If Kongo gets caught with one big hand it could be over. Don't think he will though. He's smart enough to get in and out.

Gusmao over Jones: Gusmao ran through the IFL like it was nothing (big step up to go to the UFC) but at least it was something. Both undefeated but Jones has fought absolutely nobody, so based on him just being unproven have to go with Andre.

Wilson over Bruno: Quest vs Top Team, I love it. Wilson looked good against Fitch in his last fight (not great but at least took him the distance). Bruno is on a roll, but against unproven smaller fighters. I don't think he's ready for this level. If he spends a little while down in the WEC, gets some experience against bigger guys I think he can be a force, just not right now.

Saunders over Thomas: Given this one to Saunders again simply because I know nothing about this Thomas kid. Wasn't impressed with Saunders win over Barrerra at all, but this Thomas kid's biggest fight was against Jason Bowling. Wouldn't put any money down here though as this is a real undeucated pick.

Damn, I lost a lot of money tonight. Huerta, Herring, and Fitch all did nothing. I'll say this, Lesnar is for real. That guy is a monster.

Did much better last night. Was happy to see Rashad put Chuck away (with one of the nastiest KOs I've seen in a long time at that). Not to mention just looking around the crowd after and seeing everyone's faces (particularly Dana White's), most shocked crowd I've seen since Gonzaga kicked Cro Cop's head off. Now we'll likely get to see Rashad vs. Forest as well as Chuck vs. Wandie pt. 2.

Hendo finally got a nice much needed win, and Franklin looked great at 205. That guy's accuracy may make him a force at that weight, though I think it's a testament to how great Andersen Silva is when we see former 185 golden boys moving to a stacked 205 class simply because they can not beat Andersen.

Pissed that UFC didn't show the Pellegrino fight as it actually got Fight of the Night, with Pellegrino beating Tavares. Marquardt looked good in his fight, would like to see him and Hendo in the future, though my love for Hendo doesn't want to see him take another loss. Macdonald got a nice win last night. The guy fought Maia like a month ago and is already back in the cage, you have to love it. Dude's conditioning and heart are top notch, he may never be a champion but I think he's one of those guys that is always going to be around and that will be a good measuring stick of where someone is, much like Jeremy Horn (all time fave) of way back when.

MacDonald has become an incredibly entertaining fighter this year. You have to give him props even after losing to Maia - he was forced to take his bjj to the limit and put on a great show.

Also, RIP Ice Man...

Yeah, sorry about that, thought there was more interest based on the original posts, but was wrong I suppose.

There is a substantial amount of homoerotic appeal to this sport.

Kimbo Slice just got his ass beat by a white guy with pink and black hair that took the fight on less than a days notice.
Ken Shamrock pulled out on short notice due to stitches in his eye. The injury occurred during a casual training session.
I almost thought all this shit seemed rigged like a pro-wrestling storyline, but Slice is there moneymaker so it would be absolutely retarded to have him lose.

Actually saw that in a mexican joint tonight. Fucking joke.

To me, that whole spectacle is the greatest obstacle of MMA and UFC. There was this huge build up and a WWF type intro aaaaaaaaaand it was over in 10 seconds. You can't ask people to keep paying for shit like that. Obviously they still do great numbers but in order to become truly the dominate the pugilist sporting market they gotta do better. Props to the pick haired guy but but fuck.

It's the equivalent of Western Kentucky playing Oklahoma for 5 minutes of the 1st quarter and the game being over with WKU winning 3-0.

The rest of the card was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, Elite XC put all of their money into a guy who was known more for his story and looks than his skills. If they put Kimbo against Brett Rogers or Antonio Silva, it would have been over in 5 seconds instead of 14.

^Yep. Tried to salvage a company with a guy who just wasn't that good. Really, anyone can beat up some neighborhood guys in the backyard, doesn't mean you're ready for MMA. I have always hated Kimbo and hope this puts an end to him.

Unfortunately, with EliteXC already being $50M+ in the hole and there great marketing ploy falling apart now we're going to have a few really talented fighters without a home. Perhaps the UFC will take a second chance on Nick Diaz now that Nate is making a name for himself. They're both dicks, but the guys can fight.

With that, really looking forward to the upcoming Jardine/Vera fight. Could care less about Bisping/Leben though.
