The Complete Verve Johnny Hodges Small Group Sessions 1956-1961

I'm a big fan of Johnny Hodges, the lead alto soloist for Duke Ellington who went on to lead his own groups and collaborate with Duke on several occasions. I'm particularly fond of his small group work. So, this 6 CD box is perfect for me. My only quibble is that it is called "complete." Yet, it is missing much of his classic collaborations with Duke on the Side by Side and Back to Back albums, both recorded and released within the years listed on this set. A minor issue for me since I've got all that stuff already, but just when you call something "complete" I kinda expect it to contain everything. Maybe since those were collaboration rather than specifically Hodges dates is why they're not on here.

Anyway, this collection is filled with fantastic laid back swing with an emphasis on the melodic blues and ballads Hodges excelled at playing. Features a host of other players from Duke's big bands in a more relaxed setting. For me, jazz doesn't get much better than this.

It's the new Marnie Stern. It's my first time through and my first time ever hearing her. I must say, I'm intrigued.
