I find myself skimming them once or twice, picking out a good track or 2 for mp3 mixes. Then I catalog it and put it on a shelf to collect dust.

So far, I have all 153 CMJ New Music Monthly Discs, and Magnet Samplers 6 through 49.

Generally I rip them to the computer and then throw them away. Unless it's for a specific label that I'm a big fan of or something like that.

i keep most of them and usually take a handful to dj gigs, picking out songs no one's listened to in years.

They generally collect dust, with a few tracks ripped to mp3. They were far more useful while I was in college (and on a limited budget).

Used to keep them thinking I could use some of the songs on mixes, but they all were eventually tossed in the trash.

I had a couple of CMJ discs, but I thought they weren't really worth it. You got one really good track, a couple of decent ones, and 13 total crap ones. I got pretty reckless with keeping them and they got lost in a move a while back, and I've purposefully avoided obtaining once since 02.

i listen to them and see if there's something i could use for a mix. i don't get them very often though. i think my last haul of samplers were the freebies i got on Record Store Day.

I've listened to a handful of them over the years, but I've reached a point now where I won't even bother. Maybe if I had one from a really good label, I'd listen to the tracks from bands I'm not familiar with. I haven't ever come across any such thing, though. Pretty much every sampler I've ever gotten has been from a label I've never heard of that ended up being pretty crappy.

Ten to fifteen years ago I used to buy CMJ mostly for the sampler. The last year I subscribed to CMJ and Magnet, I threw out most of the samplers without even giving them a listen. The Uncut, Mojo, and Songlines samplers are usually a little better but some of those have also piled up unlistened and I've been debating tossing those too. In any case, they are usually tossed after I listen to them once and decide if I want to check out any of the bands that are included. The exception is some of the better themed or artist curated ones. For example, Mojo or Uncut had a sampler in which Keith Richards picked some of his favorite songs, one in which Pete Townsend picked out songs by artists that had influenced the Who, and one in which Bono assembled american songs that U2 had been listening to when recording/touring in support of The Joshua Tree. All three of those samplers are pretty sweet. I have no interest in keeping 150+ samplers from CMJ or any other mag. That's a complete waste of storage space.

Rip. Keep. Amazed at how many are picked whenever MusicIP makes a mix.

They usually pile up on my desk, then I get so frustrated with the pile that I spend a day skimming them...I give each song two minuters to either grab me or get skipped.

I keep a list of the bands/songs I liked and then eventually check out the band a little more in depth.

If its a sampler from a label I like, I will listen to it all. Otherwise, I don't really listen to them.
