I also thought they were going to do a series based on James Ellroy's American Tabloid and The Cold 6000. Maybe I'm just dreaming that though.

If done right, this would be the Greatest Thing Ever.

I recently dropped Showtime, and while I can't conceive of getting rid of HBO, agree that they need to bring it and quick.

Yeah. I am sure the casting will be all wrong, the tone off, and the general mayhem curtailed.

I started re-reading American Tabloid last night and am halfway through.

I just re-read The Cold 6000 and I didn't like it as much as I originally thought. Maybe one of Ellroy's weakest novels. It's almost to thick with his schtick.

The middle 3/4s is too full of the fake memos and phone call transcripts, but I wouldn't say its weak.

AmTab and Cold 6 have affected my psyche to the point that I can't even describe it. Amazing.

It also dissolves into sentence fragments for whole chapters, but like you say--still highly entertaining.

There was some phrase in the 1st chapter of AmTab that had me laughing so hard Femgar thought I was going to need oxygen -- also, best thing about these books: imminently re-readable.

Yeah, I've had that on my radar for a while now. Getting myself an early x-mas present.

I just finished Season 2 last night. It was every bit as engrossing as Season 1. Outstanding writing. Outstanding characters. It's funny how this season totally changed my perception of certain characters. If you had asked me at the end of Season 1, I would have thought McNulty was gonna cruise by as lovable in a "he's fucked, but he's a good cop" kind of way, but more and more I just see him as a sleazy, lying, scumbag.

Daniels is the man.

And Valchek, holy fuck, what a piece of assholery this guy is!

The last episode was too short, and I didn't really like the way it ended. But hey, "that's life".

I just finished Season 2 this morning, and I was also a tad disappointed by the ending. Thought somehow Nicky would end up getting whacked like Uncle Frank. Loved seeing Prez coldcock Valchek. Bunk and Freamon are greatness. Herc and Carv are a couple of inept whiny bitches. I need to start Season 3 on DVD ASAP. Great, great series, though I still think Homicide: Life on the Street wins by the brim of a pork-pie hat.

You won't say that after you watch S3, Bobbo.

Season 3 is the high-water mark. Picks up just about all the old threads plus gives you major new players like Bunny, Mah-Lo, Cutty, Carcetti, Slim Charles, Chris and Snoop. I just finished rewatching it last weekend and I don't think there's a bum note the entire way.

Related: Saw it mentioned in EW a few issues ago that HBO is producing Simon's new series about post-Katrina New Orleans. Glad he's back in his wheelhouse of telling stories of the fucked-over and left behind. Should be some great TV.

yeah, i agree season 4 is the series pinnacle. season 3 is great for the hamsterdam story, chris and snoop, some other characters that are rounded out, but i think season 4's one of the best television series seasons ever.

I hope Carver was standing on top of a police car when he spoke

One thing that isn't in dispute is which season has the best opening scene
