Haha I watched this last week too. It was indeed awful, but I knew that going in. This is pretty funny, from AV Club's "I Watched This On Purpose" feature:

So I was a little bummed looking at the Netflix sleeve—this thing is an hour and 47 minutes, which is considerably longer than 88.

haha i thought that too.

I usually like Mike Leigh's movies but this was as bland as oatmeal. He needs to go back to making films about depressed alcoholics again. This is art-house chick flick lite. Do not recommend.

Yeah, well they did this movie already as "A Few Good Men" and "Training Day". Also, borrrrring. Not even Edward Norton, who is usually good, could save this film.

last night i watched the diving bell and the butterfly. it's a sad movie, but it didn't move me much, except for the father's day scene. does someone want to tell me why this was lauded last year?

I saw Rachael Getting Married last night.

The Dad (played by a creepy-looking Bill Irwin) got on my ever last nerve as did the contrived hipness and "eclecticism" surrounding the wedding event.
Rosemarie Dewitt was great as Rachael and deserves whatever rewards will surely come her way for this role.
Anne Hathaway's "Kim" brought up some bad memories as I know girls who share her penchant for histrionics.
I dug Tunde Adebimpe's (who didn't do too much acting, except in the "dishwasher-loading race scene") singing Neil's "Unknown Legend" during the sharing of the vows. As expected, Demme did inject great music into the movie and it made me wish I could replicate the musical atmosphere from that wedding reception.

Has anyone seen Rolemodels? Directed by David Wain (State/Wet Hot American Summer/Wainy Days). I'll probably check it out just because of his and Paul Rudd's involvement.

Z, I really liked Diving Bell and the Butterfly. To each his own, I guess. I didn't cry or anything, but I liked the story. I'm too far removed from seeing it to give a precise critique.

i actually saw role models with paul rudd. we weren't on a date, but he was in the same room. i enjoyed it. bobb’e j thompson stole the show.

yeah, diving bell wasn't a bad movie; it just came with a lot of baggage due to the awards. and i guess i didn't see what everyone else must've.

Zach and Miri - dumb fun, I laughed a lot.
There Will Be Blood - Great looking movie, good acting, It was a good movie in that sense, but I didn't get into it at all.
The Edge of Heaven - Really liked
Be Kind Rewind - It was ok, it kept my attention.
Lolita - I hadn't watched this since college and it was was better than I remembered

oh, and The Diving Bell and The Butterfly was great.

Yes, it was. I think I already talked about it earlier in this thread.

Recently saw Hot Fuzz. I actually didn't laugh at much of it (until near the end), but I thought it was a really fun movie nonetheless. I could watch it again.

My only real complaint was all the flashy Guy Ritchie-style editing. It didn't really seem over-the-top or ridiculous enough to be funny.

Saw "W." last Friday. It was an okay study of the man and about on par with Stone's recent efforts.

The "eye on the ball" metaphor that plays throughout was a little too ham-fisted. It all just goes by so fast and I keep wanting him to go into more detail about certain periods of his life.

In the end I just kept thinking that you can be the biggest spoiled fuck up in the world but with money, power, and influence at your disposal you can be President of the United States.

Cheney's (Richard Dreyfus) speech in the War room about imperialism and oil is a bit frightening.

I thought that one just got better with each viewing.

no man's land: the rise of reeker unnecessary sequel. it was pretty meh, some decent effects but nothing that wasn't seen in the original.

the psychic (aka sette note in nero) so-so lucio fulci movie. some things were a little ridiculous per usual for fulci films but it kept my attention for most of the movie. stay away from it if you're expecting fulci's usual over the top gore though.

transsiberian it's not on par with brad anderson's best movies (session 9, the machinist) but it's a good hitchcock-ian thriller. emily mortimer is excellent.

lilo & stitch uh, yeah i liked it.

Same for me..

I finally saw Shopgirl. I was pretty critical of it throughout and then ended up crying at the end (this rarely happens and wouldn't have had I not been watching alone - thank you, fragile emotional state). I've been thinking about it for two days now, though, and like it more with thought.

One complaint that probably won't ease, though, the score was too much.

I agree with all of this, assuming the "good" has a shrug accompanying it.

Just watched Undertow. Was expecting more of the sleepy southern-gothic drama a la George Washington and All the Real Girls that David Gordon Green is known for, but this was quite different. This was his usual beautifully shot movie with sometimes-absurd dialogue, but with the added elements of horror and chase movies as well as some interesting editing. It was pretty great, and made me move his other film Snow Angels to the top of my queue.

The flashy editing in Hot Fuzz is all part of the joke.

I finally got around to watching

[img][360:500]http://images.doba.com/474/000799107829.jpg[/img]

last weekend. Pretty campy and not nearly as enjoyable as Dolemite, Foxy Brown or most of the other blaxploitation movies I've seen. No subtitles at least!

I thought the same thing. I thought she had sort of goofy look, but she's hot as fuck in that.

Watched "The Visitor" over the weekend. Definitely recommend it. I've linked the metacritic page to see if it's up your alley. A pretty simple human drama film in post-9/11 NY that says alot without over-reaching.

i saw rocknrolla tonight. the beginning was kind of lame with the "introducing" of all the wacky characters. it seems like a crutch that ritchie relies on in every movie. it got much better after that though. nothing new but it was done well. the ending was a bit of a letdown and i guess he wants to try and make this a trilogy. toby kebbell was the definite star of the movie though.

excellent soundtrack too.

Kicking and Screaming (Baumbach not Ferrell) was a lot funnier than I remembered the only other time I watched it 2 years ago
