it's not that it's bad
it's just that i don't think it's groundbreaking in any fashion

if someone told me "check out this folksy solo artist from eau claire wi"
this is EXACTLY how i would imagine it
before hearing it

i think if you're really into this, there's definitely no shortage of music out there for you

I'm with you. I tried several times but didn't quite get what the fuss was about.

Then again, I really liked Iron & Wine's first couple of albums and then kind of put em on the shelf. Maybe I'm just full right now on my indie folk.

I find that although the dude is not redefining the genre, the subtleties of this album are what make it high on my list. There are some really beautiful layers to the songs. It just sounds nice. I think that he offers something "fresh" although consistent with the genre as a whole. Every time I listen to the album I hear something else that I like and then I will listen to the track over and over again for a week or something--same thing happened with The Brother Kite debut. I am not shouting about that For Emma was the best album ever made, but it is certainly enjoyable more than some other discs I've spun in the recent past.

I still listen to this weekly. I'm a big folkie to begin with, though.

I get tired of some of the Elephant 6 tom foolery, like the extended gaps of him using a ebow on an acoustic, or the repititions at the end of songs ... get on with it. But the little flourishes and harmonies, the stuff he builds up, sometimes does add up to make for some fine moments.

I think what is working for this record is that its very easy to connect with, without it sounding cheesy or trite.

The long winter in the cabin, the heartache, the solitude...it all comes through and makes it more than a collection of songs.

would this record be as good, or even as well liked if it had been recorded in a studio with a full band?

Are we sure about this? I thought the cabin was his father's hunting lodge -- yup, anothertrustifarian, like Winston &/or Winfield Butler -- & that Vernon is actually from somewhere nearer Madison or Milwaukee.

Or maybe he just looks like he should be playing with Call Me Lightning?

Speaking of this, I think For Emma... is going to be a great winter record.

I like it and it's still growing on me. I don't quite understand the extreme love this seems to be getting but definitely enjoy it more than most quiet-folky music I hear.

This has grown on me to the point that it's my favorite record of the year. If you like it, you can download a free EP from his MySpace session here:
