I kind of like all the studio albums to a certain extent, or rather I don't openly dislike any (although to Loogs' credit, Vitalogy does veer into some fucking stupid territory at times). Most days I usually grab for the live albums when I feel like some PJ.

'Go' is one of my favourite opening tracks of all time.

Great call, and probably the single greatest performance in MTV Unplugged history.

Few songs I can think of are as immune to being overplayed as this one. Just too great to ever get tired of.

Definitely an underrated Neil Young album and probably better than every Pearl Jam album other than No Code.

Vitalogy is sort of PJ's Goat's Head Soup: Some truly great songs mixed with some of the worst shit ever put on tape.

Reading this thread and seeing a crap load of titles I don't recognize just reminds me how little I really ever cared about this band. I liked hearing 'em on the radio when they came on, but none of the records really made much impression on me. They were probably me least favorite of the grunge brigade.

Not that I didn't like grunge stuff in general. I actually really liked it for the way finally we got punk fans and classic rock fans together on something...all the drunken fuck ups working together was a bit of fun. Pearl Jam just never did anything for me. Hell, I liked Temple of the Dog better than Pearl Jam.

It is. The creation of the ipod has skewed my opinions of albums like this. Who still listens to Bugs?

The only thing on Vitalogy that I think is really awful is the last track. "Bugs" isn't exactly good, but it's really short. "Spin the Black Circle" is retarded if you pay attention to the lyrics, but it's a pretty fun song and, again, is pretty short. The ones that I now find unbearably cheesy are "Nothingman" and "Better Man". Then you have a couple of throwaway tracks in "Pry, To" and "Aye Davanita" which don't particularly help or hurt the album. The rest of it, especially "Tremor Christ", "Corduroy", "Last Exit", and "Immortality", is pretty solid as Pearl Jam albums go.

Also, the AMG ratings for Pearl Jam albums are pretty wacky.

Or in my case, dubbing the cd to tape for play in my car and NOT including songs that sucked.

Better than me. I bought the first 2. I can't seem to find them anywhere and don't remember how long ago I even bothered to listen.

To be fair: I did listen to them early on but I burned out on Eddie's voice pretty quickly.

i went as far as the first 2 as well.

recently, though, the burn out has worn off and i've gone back and "acquired" all of their studio albums and a killer live set (@ the gorge) and i think i'm finally able to enjoy these guys again.

Yeah the Gorge set is fantastic. I've been slowly acquiring all of those official live boots from 2000 as well.

very strange ratings...No Code and Yield got the lowest ratings, and i think those are their best albums... i often dont agree with the ratings and reviews given by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

y'know i'm gonna go back and listen to what i have of their albums (ten through yield) because you got me thinking about some of the awful songs they've put out. vitalogy was my favorite at the time but it came out 14 years ago so i'll have to see how it holds up for me.

Yeah I'm a pretty huge fan of theirs but I've never really gotten this one. To me it's sounds like a song that SNL would write to spoof them...like 15 years ago.

Probably the reason why it was a b-side and also why they were surprised it gained so much popularity.

it does sound like sandler doing his eddie vedder impression.

yeah, brilliance

his lyrics are best heard mumbled.

What was the other song on the Singles soundtrack? I seem to remember really preferring that one to "State of Love and Trust".

If I had to pick an album, it'd probably be Vs or Yield, though I haven't heard either in too long.
