Anybody like this album. I was thinking about buying it.

Here is the pitchfork review. I think this is how you define "snarky"

Polish your royal metaphors and lube up the groupies because rawk is back, and oh boy do I mean it this time. I mean rawk. I mean raunchy songs about sleazy fucking and raunchy guitar that squeals like a guitar sleazily fucking. I mean paunchy guys with eyeliner muttering, "Who's your daddy?" in fake British accents, and you know they're serious about their raunchy sleazy guitar fucking or else their whole fucking act is a fucking act. Rawk!

These guys will steal your girlfriend and knock her up in your Econoline van, but they'll do it sensitive-style, like: "Hey carrot juice, I wanna squeeze ya every way until ya bleed." That's from their super-rad hit single "Finding Out True Love Is Blind", which is Julian Casablancas singing the Stones' "Some Girls" or the "About a Million Girls" song from The Simpsons over the chords from Green Day's "Brain Stew" played through Jack White's distortion pedals. Plus it has a beat you can dance to, but that's OK because chicks dig that shit.

This album has raunchy sleazy guitar solos, like on opener "Louis XIV", which sounds like Noel Gallagher fucking AC/DC's guest list in assless chaps. Lead Louis man Jason Hill tells MTV that I've never heard T. Rex, and of course he's right. I haven't heard Mark E. Smith, either, but my pansy-ass neighbor says something called Art Brut "does more with Smith's influence." Plus, he says make-out anthem "Marc" sounds like a Ben Folds post-Five piano ballad with delusions of "Life's a Gas"-like grandeur instead of humor or melodicism. Twerp doesn't get half the tang I do, though. Rawk!

These songs have lyrics that don't have to make sense because the guy singing them is too busy with raunchy sleazy fucking for all that shit; lines like "you said so in a letter that said return to sender, my illegally illegal tender." Timeless, yes, but Hill's words are timely, too: "weapon of mass destruction" in a rawk song? What next? There's also an instrumental, "Louis Reprise", which starts like the Beatles' "The End" from Dad's classic rock station but swerves into fiddles and horns, like a more frat-ready Dave Matthews Band, whose concert last year almost got me stoned and laid, so whatever. Fuckin' rawk!

One bummer: No actual swearing. The "parental advisory" sticker is just for the cover, which is worth the price alone if only as proof you're not a homo even though you just bought a record named after a French historical figure (like John Kerry, haw haw), unless the chick's really a dude like on that Roxy Music album under my bed. But it's really all rawk, rawk, rawk unless the Sun King is wearing no clothes like Fred Durst in that stolen Sidekick video I of course didn't watch.

I dig it and I dig their sound... although, from what I've read on here before, the majorit of Oberland disagrees.

this is such a crappy band name. I keep mixing it up with Napoleon XIV, who I think is responsible for "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Ha"...which won't help anyone. I seem to remember the b-side to that song holding some distinct record, but I could only imagine what in my old age.

anyway, I haven't heard it. Comparing it to Some Girls kinda makes me want to hear it, but then Some Girls has some pretty crapy songs on it, a la the title track and that goddawful disco shiticle called "I Miss You"

I love it when baseball PA systems play this when the opposing pitcher gets yanked. Kills me every time.

The only 1/2way bad song on Some Girls, is Beast of Burden, which is stil better tan 95% od songs ever written.

But, comparing this album to Some Girls does make me want to at leats here it.

I don't even mind BoB. "Before They Make Me Run" just might be my favorite Stones song ever. the disco, however, sounds like Mick's coke phlegm dripping of Bowie's rod.

I love it. Miss You and Shattered are fucking awesome, but yeah I like Before they Make Me and respectable much better, but in a different way.

There are no "bad" Stones songs, its just that the disco and terribel stuff in the later years are good in a different, more mongerous way. It's hard to explain.

well, that's the problem. Mick wants to sound "now" all the time, and this results in trying to ape a sound that is deriving itself from 4rd generation stones songs. I can't believe Keith even goes for that shit half the time. and there are plenty of bad stones songs. "Far Away Eyes" is one. almost all of their 80s output is pretty bad. and call it sacrelige, but i can't stand "Gimme Shelter", though the female singer on that track tells my favorite Keef story of all time. Mary Clayton? I think that's her name. something like that.

nah. start debating about Spoon (orbetter yet the Wrens) and you'll witness the wreckage. LooGAR and I are just discussing the classics.

I'm not a huge fan of Street Fighting Man, and I understand the 80s bias, they put out some dogshit, but in its own way, it is awesome. But if you have to have a shitty Stones song, I'll give you "Gomper."

I thought those were illegal in the U.S. ...
Guess being from San Diego has it's border-hopping advantages...

They're horrible, Dave...just awful. I understand from others that the album isn't bad, but live they suck hard.

The "brown girl" comment is from their song, "Finding Out True Love is Bline".

From what I've heard of Louis XIV they don't sound anything like the Stones. Not much like T.Rex or Bowie, for that matter. They sound sorta like if Iggy talk-sang his way through "Walk On The Wild Side" while a bar band drunkenly mauled "Roxy Roller". Granted, I've only heard two songs, but they both sounded exactly like that.

Still, I'll probably give it another listen when the full-length drops. All the songs on that Illegal Tender ep will be on the full-length except for "Marc" and the "Louis XIV" reprise.

Hehe, I thought maybe you were offended by something in Some Girls...you know back in the day the whole "Black Girls just wanna get f*cked all night" line caused a stir.
