and now this has happened.

The operator, Airports of Thailand, said they had shut it down after anti-government protesters surged into the main terminal building.

At least 2,000 supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) had surrounded the airport as part of their six-month campaign to oust the government.

A spokesman for the operator said:"We have already informed the airlines who operate from it.

"Flights in the air will be diverted to either Chiang Mai, Phuket or other airports, but it closed as of 9pm (2pm GMT)."

British Airways told Sky News that all flights scheduled to land at the airport have cancelled or diverted.

Those flights that would have stopped in Bangkok en route to other destinations have been diverted to Singapore

What are the chances?

Pretty annoying.

You should go anyway, but in a rowboat.

Geez, consider yourself lucky- you could have been in the air as that happened.

I was discussing this today at work. I'd personally avoid planning any travelling to there right now, but if I was in your shoes I might take the risk.
It doesn't sound like they are really attacking or targeting foreigners, and you probably won't die there due to this unrest.

What are/were you going to do there?

Go to Bangkok for a bit and then make my way to Phuket. The latter may still be an option, depending on how politically unstable it all becomes by tomorrow evening.

So, they think the airport will be open by tomorrow night. Any later and I'm calling this whole thing off.

It's great that the people are taking democracy into their own hands, I guess.

Don't go Bangkok/Thailand, mate.

They reckon Saturday at the earliest for the airport. I have a flight home for Dec 2nd and i am sweating.

It's getting pretty bad, somebody chucked a grenade at a police box 200 metres from my hotel 3 days ago. I have "escaped" five hours bus ride north till Sunday.

I met a Bangkok cop (corrupt bunch of wankers) this morning at my hotel, he reckoned a week.

But i am not sure if that was before the government ordered the police to "move in" or after.

If you can get a flight&your happy to stick to he main westerner area (Khao Sahn Road) then you should be fine bu tyou have a higher than average chance of getting your balls blown off. If you want to explore the city, fuck it.

Fucking Thai keyboards.

Yeah there's no way I can even get into the country let alone stick to my itinerary. It's all off.

I was meant to be meeting my little brother there (who lives in Hanoi) so it was more about catching up with him than Thailand itself, so that's a shame.

On an unrelated note, one of my school mates was the guy who along with his girlfriend got shot by the terrorists in Mumbai the other day.

It's all falling apart.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friends, Mick. According to the news, they should be able to recover from their injuries. Still...what a horrible experience to go through.

Yeah they're fine (well as fine as you could be after being shot at)

She got shot in the leg and he got grazed by a bullet on the hip. They were only in the country a couple of hours. Hairy.
