I like "Chemtrails", but I'm not real sure about anything else. Haven't spun it enough.

Probably my favorite Beck album from this decade, though I could make a case for Sea Change. This is only because it seriously does not overstay its welcome in any form. In and out, over before you notice it's on, couple of good-to-alright songs, and then oh hey look Cold Brains is on.

There's a couple of decent songs, mainly "Gamma Ray," but the rest is the textbook definition of meh.

Agreed.

Actually, that's much like the other Beck albums I have.

exactly my experience but i took it as a negative. I had this on my ipod and one day the selection button just stopped working and i listened to it over and over without it leaving any sort of impression on me at all. i guess i liked it in theory (Beck's doing a straightforward rock record) moreso than in practice.

i like it, particularly the first half of the album

theres no goofiness like his first two albums, but its pretty tight in what it tries to do which is a short solid collection of straightforward rock songs

I think this one's a bit of a grower and the short length helps. Actually, I think the length of his previous couple records was unnecessarily (and with the idea about how finished a song is, etc. after Guero, I imagine DM helped to keep him on point).

Beck is about to become the REM of his generation, in that as he continues to put out quality mediocre work, it taints his early successes. I listened to this, and it only made me less likely to like anything he ever did.

I don't disagree, but nevertheless I really liked this record. I think the length of it definitely made a difference. A few more songs and I probably wouldn't have the same opinion.

The difference is, Beck's best work doesn't approach the best work of REM especially in its ability to hold up over time.

Yes, I agree with this. It's an analogy of structure, not scale.

OTM!

REM are so fucking overrated. at least Beck has an album or two i can listen to, while i never need to hear REM again.

Pretty 'meh' on first listen outside of a few songs. No desire to revisit.
