I usually like Mike Leigh's movies but this was as bland as oatmeal. He needs to go back to making films about depressed alcoholics again. This is art-house chick flick lite. Do not recommend.

This is finally opening up around here and I love Mike Leigh but the trailers make me nervous...it looks like a twee-pop album put to film or something. Is there anything depressing in this at all? The clips I saw were way too happy about life for me (and weren't funny, either). [/i]

Oh man, my wife really wants to see that movie. I don't think I've seen any Mike Leigh yet.

eden lake - the storyline seemed kind of underwhelming (couple on vacation at lake gets terrorized) but the ending was fucked up and there's a scene with a mostly off-screen death that's probably the most horrifying i've ever seen/heard.

kinda been wanting to rent that movie.. the michael jackson dodad.
kinda glad i haven't.

just watched tropic thunder this week. holy shit that was hilarious, and looked fucking amazing on blu-ray.

also just watched my copy of poultrygeist. fucking amazing. kind of slow at first, the songs are kind of long (it's a musical) but when it gets brutal, it's fucking amazing. zombie chickens, blood splatter, girl gets her face ripped off, decapitation, lots of green barf. so good. so fucking good.

This guy is Black Putin Wrote:
I liked Bond but it's almost completely joyless. I could have used some more schmooze and slay. Thank god there was no miraculous poker game in it though, but the bad guy could have possessed more menace/charisma too.

Bond was good, not terrible, not great. Putin's right in that it was a pretty grim affair. But It felt to me a lot more like a Bond movie than the last one, at least in the Moore/Dalton (yeah, I said it) sense. No Q, but there wasn't one in the last one, either. I bet John Cleese shrugged indifferently. I thought the most interesting tech in the whole movie was the nerd's desktop at MI6. I also thought the best villain was the CIA dude with the mustache. Shows what I know.
That whole rope fight thing kinda pissed me off though.

yeah there was maybe one point where i sort of chuckled. it's like depress-o bond. some of the action scenes were edited pretty badly, like they would make no sense if you weren't paying close attention but some were pretty good like the opening car chase and the plane fight. i liked the rope fight. greene was probably one of the worst bond villains ever and that fight at the end was laughable with his crazy yelling. also, did they base his 2nd in command on jim carrey from dumb & dumber? that guy was really distracting. also distracting were some of the other MI6 agents calling judi dench "mum". i thought she was actually that first guy's mother.

olga kurylenko is really the hottest girl ever though.

Good call on this. Some great visuals especially at the end.

i rewatched all the Jurassic Park movies. they were all ok. those cgi dinos didn't hold up over time though.

i watched Narnia - Prince Caspian. it was ok. i never read any of the books, so the plot was interesting enough. despite it being different in many ways, it was also A LOT like the previous movie, including but not limited to the appearance/disappearance of Aslan, humans being startled by talking animals, and a big fight at the end.

i started to watch that animated star wars movie but i feel asleep. maybe i'll finish it tonight.

The Draughtsman's Contract - First Peter Greenaway movie that I've seen, as far as I know. I liked it a lot, especially for a period movie in that kind of setting. I loved how composed the shots were, how dense and clever the dialogue was, and how over the top some of the costumes were, especially the wigs. I can't say I really followed the "mystery" all that well, though, as I watched it in three separate sittings.

The Spiderwick Chronicles - Watched this with my parents over the holiday. Really a pretty decent kids/family flick. I was pretty entertained by it, and once I got over the acting by the kid who played the twins, there wasn't really anything about it that I found distractingly childish.

Tropic Thunder - Tried watching this with my parents (bad idea!) until my dad had us shut it off out of disgust. He was ranting about how it was demeaning to Vietnam vets (and maybe on some level it was, but he wouldn't really know) and was generally set off by the language and silly gore. My wife and I finished watching it later on, but neither of us were really able to enjoy it that much. I think the first 15 minutes would probably have been the funniest part of the whole movie, but it was ruined by the uncomfortable situation of watching it with my dad, after which the initial surprise/novelty of it was gone. Robert Downey, Jr. was pretty awesome as was Jack Black, but I was actually kind of disappointed in Tom Cruise's character after reading so much praise for it. And still the mystery of Danny McBride's fame continues to haunt me...

I sat right between my mother and father (right wing as they are) in a theater during Magnolia. The tense awkwardness of "Tame the Cunt; Respect the Cock" was only made that much lighter by my jovial whisper into my father's ear,"psst, dad? What's a cunt?"

last house in the woods - kind of an italian giallo/torture porn movie. i enjoyed it even though it was really low budget.

trackman - this was so bad. the dubbing was the worst, i really didn't care about any of the characters, there was no suspense whatsoever. just an awful attempt at a slasher film.

the strangers - eh. kind of creepy at times but has been done much better (ils, funny games). the producer who was blathering on about how awesome and inventive the film was on the "making of" annoyed me much more than the movie though.

the baby's room - part of the "6 movies to keep you awake" set which is like a spanish version of "masters of horror". i enjoyed it though i kept wondering why the main character wouldn't just leave the fucking house. well, i think it was explained a little bit but they really didn't go into it enough.

sukiyaki western django - not nearly as disturbing as most of miike's films. it looked really great though but there was a big disparity in some of the cast's command of the english language which i thought hurt it a bit. there were some neat tricks in it though (when the gunslinger jumps out of the window onto his horse).

wall-e - looks spectacular but the 2nd half of the movie is a little disappointing compared to the first. really enjoyable though.

I was kind of turned off by the previews and so forth but this is actually pretty good. I think someone in this thread called this an art house chick flick which is pretty much completely wrong. Not much plot, more of a character study. There is the depressing Mike Leigh element still found in the driving instructor. He's a pretty pathetic case.

edit: d'oh, it was South Pacific

I really need to re-watch Julian Donkey Boy to accurately reassess my opinion of Korine. But I know I still like most of Gummo.

Synecdoche, NY--Ambitious yet flawed in a way I can't really define. Worth watching though.

Happy-Go-Lucky--I enjoyed this if not merely for the fact that it was set in Camden, which is the area of London I spent most of my time in when I lived there. No real plot. Just a character study. Good acting by the lead. This movie will probably annoy the hell out of 50% of the people who watch it.

The Incredible Hulk--Better than I expected. Norton does a good job. The CGI for the Hulk still needed work though.

I can't wait to see Let the Right One In.
