Apparently a new software update allows you to stream movies in high-definition. Anyone try this yet?

Not for the Roku player, but the Xbox 360 has had this since 11/19. I watched 30 Rock season 2 streaming in HD and it worked almost flawlessly.

I wish they would add more movies.

Not that I've heard of; I don't think there's even been a peep about a possible PS3 arrangement either.

There is a video channel coming for the Wii next year though:

Nice, but I'd still prefer Netflix. Especially after reading THIS...

Quote:
Instead of offering existing movies and television programming, as seen in Sony's video on demand service and Microsoft's Xbox Live Video Marketplace, Nintendo plans to offer cartoons and "mainly family-oriented programming" options created especially for the Wii video service.

My sister and I got Mom a Roku for Christmas. I just set it up and it works great; had it up and running in 10 minutes. Only comes with the red/white/yellow cable though, so make sure you pick up an HDMI cable if you have a decent TV.

I bought that earlier this winter. one of the cool things about netflix streaming is all the music related stuff that is only available via instant viewing (concerts, band interviews, etc.). They need to add more movies though.

What's pandora.

Samsung Connected HDTVs, Blu-ray Players to Get Blockbuster Streaming

A whole mess of Samsung web-enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray players are about to get access to Blockbuster's OnDemand service. Since OnDemand doesn't require a monthly fee, this is a nice little value-add.

For owners of select TVs and Blu-ray players, Blockbuster OnDemand will function just as we've seen it before: as a broad on-demand film catalog with a decent selection of newer films.

Also...

Samsung Blu-ray players to support YouTube and MKV

Add YouTube the growing list of streaming media services supported by Samsung Blu-ray players. Effective immediately, Google's megapopular online video site will be added to the Samsung's current 2009 (and future) Blu-ray players via a free firmware update. The update also adds support for playback of MKV files. (A placeholder button has been added for the previously announced Blockbuster video-on-demand service streaming service as well; it's still on track to be added later this year.)

We were able to run the automatic firmware update on our Samsung BD-P3600 review sample quickly and painlessly. The YouTube main menu (shown above) looks different from the Yahoo Widget-ized version you'll find on Samsung TVs, but it's otherwise pretty similar to the YouTube experience on other electronics products. Our only beef was--just like other non-PC YouTube players--it doesn't stream YouTube's HD content.

Its MKV support was also good. We played back an MKV-wrapped AVC file (1.37GB, 1,024 x 550-pixel resolution) from a USB thumbdrive. Aside from a slight stutter at the very beginning, playback was smooth and problem-free, and we had no problems using fast-forward and rewind. (For the uninformed: MKV support is a favorite of digital media geeks who get their HD movies from more unconventional sources, such as BitTorrent.)

The YouTube upgrade was first mentioned just yesterday at Samsung's IFA news conference in Berlin. It's available on all three current 2009 Blu-ray players: The BD-P1600, BD-P3600, and BD-P4600. Those services join Netflix and Pandora that are already available on the players. For those keeping score at home, this upgrade makes the Samsung Blu-ray players more competitive with the excellent LG BD370.

Separately, a Samsung representative has confirmed to CNET that YouTube and Blockbuster support will also be rolled out to the company's 2009 Blu-ray home theater systems (HT-BD1250, HT-BD7200, HT-BD8200, HT-BD3252) later this year, but no date has yet been specified.

Just did the firmware update, and i'm now streaming Radiohead from Santiago in HD, and it looks great!

Can't wait for YouTube HD to hit!!!!

This just added so much value to my Samsung player, holy shit.

Why they don't do this with all DVD players is beyond me. My Netflix instant streaming is pretty much all I watch. I'd never seen an episode of Lost until they added it and I've blazed through the first two seasons in about a month.

You will need a Netflix disc in your drive the whole time, but that doesn't seem like a huge deal to me. Apparently, it wont come as an app to the PS3 until late 2010.
