how do you manually add songs to your i-pod? i know you can automatically update your i-pod, but i don't want to do that because i'll be uploading stuff from various computers and i'm afraid that it will delete everything if i do this.

help!

speaking of, do most people here who use one pc/mac for their ipod have their setting on manual or auto update? I'm running out of HD space on my laptop, so I either have to get an external hard drive and keep the update to auto, or switch the setting to manual, delete off the hard drive and free up space. what to do, what to do

Have to do manual. Library's too big for auto-update.

I hear ya but I love my external. It has over 120G space and I like not having to worry about space and just importing whatever I want anytime.

I only have a 20G Ipod so auto update is out. I usually will remove a bunch of shit and put new albums on there about once a month.

yeah but see i don't need 120G. I don't need 80G. so yeah i should probably opt to delete and manual transfer, which I take is simple drag/drop?

I'd get an external HD. It's reassuring to know I've got my shit backed up, especially for work, and especially if I ever start recording/edit sound again.

Wait a minute. I have mono. I have time on my hands.

Plus with an external you can hard transfer songs with people who live near you. ie Derris got about 120 albums in 15 minutes from mine.

I don't use iTunes though. Sketch I can't believe that you do either (big no no at Ubernet). I use a program called vPod. It rocks and with it you can easily get songs from any computer to any ipod.

Yeah once you're on manual you can just delete whatever you want from your Ipod and the albums will stay on you harddrive. Then just fill it back up.

I have so much shit that I will usually just delete my whole Ipod and start from scratch. It doesn't take that long and I will ensure that I'm not listening to the same shit over and over.

I actually use Anapod for transfer and iTunes for everything else iPod related. Essentially, though it's still a manual transfer, though Anapod's functionality is pretty awesome (drop-and-drag via Windows Explorer, supports m3u files, etc.) iTunes is much better for tweaking the database and creating Smart Playlists.

My dilema is this:

I don't own a computer, but I have a laptop that my firm gave me. Since I bought my ipod I've used the Laptop to store my music. This makes me very uncomfortable because I have put most of my cd collection on it and I don't think my firm would find that appropriate. Also, I have about 70mb of space left on my ipod, so I only have room for a few more albums. I'm trying to decide whether to buy an external HD, buy a computer, or say fuck it and turn my ipod on manual and erase my laptop HD and just carry my music with me (without any back up). I really want a computer and almost bought one a couple weeks ago, but money is tight for me right now and I want a bit of a cushion for when annual reviews come up..just in case.

I'd say external HD + manual.

I concur.

Sketch did you pay for anapod. Or do you perhaps have a version I could get via DC++

I paid. Worth it, IMHO. Here's a detailed page of all of its functionality, and the trial version has enough of it to see if it works for you.

That's exactly the case for me.... I have some stuff downloaded on my work comp (shh, don't tell anyone) so I've been transferring it over to my i-pod and now I can delete all that stuff. But I'm afraid that each time I upload more music on my i-pod, it will delete everything and I'll be damned!

Word to this.

I have been meaning to look into alternative file transfer software, like vPod...
Can you hook a buddy up with a link?

Absolutely external hard drive and manual updates. I just copped a 250 GB HD for about $150 at MacMall. Extremely cheap right now... also, Lacie is about to release new ones in the next few weeks for great prices as well.

Hit up pricewatch. I see a 250 for 122 with shipping right now.

ive been considering buying the parts individually for an external hard drive and assembling them myself, since i would be doing it on the cheap and the individual components i can buy for cheap on ebay. but i was wondering, is there anything i need to worry about with assembly? it seems like a pretty easy process, basically buying an enclosure and a hard drive and connecting them, but it sounds too easy. is it easy, or if its not, can you give me any tips or point me to a guide?

Anapod does this, and I believe ephpod as well.
